Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 saddles up and rides off HBO Max next month, heading for Prime Video.

Well, you’ve probably heard about Kevin Costner’s massive Western passion project by now—the one that crashed and burned at the box office earlier this year. ('Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1', if you missed the title cards.) The numbers weren’t kind: $38 million earned, with a reported $50 million spent just making the thing. That’s before anyone even paid for popcorn.

Costner Bets Big—And Loses (For Now)

Let’s not sugarcoat it: 'Horizon' was clearly the biggest all-in move of Costner’s career. The guy pulled money out of his own properties, literally refinancing parts of his life to get this sweeping Western off the ground. Not only did he star, Costner also wrote and directed the whole thing—and let’s face it, that’s a lot of hats for one head.

What did that gamble buy audiences? A three-hour sprawl set during America’s westward expansion, with threads following settlers, soldiers, outlaws, and Native Americans. It's grimy, violent, and doesn’t hold back on the ugly side of frontier life—definitely not your granddad’s sepia-tinged cowboy movie. For some, that worked: the film managed a solid 70% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, mostly from people who liked how un-romantic it all was.

Streaming Shuffle: Where to Watch

After stumbling in theaters, 'Horizon: Chapter 1' managed a second wind on HBO Max, where it performed surprisingly well. Apparently, there’s something about a sprawling American epic that just feels more palatable when you can pause for snacks. Now, the film’s hitting Prime Video and mixing up its streaming home starting May 23. So if you have strong opinions about the fate of Westerns—and who doesn’t these days?—get ready to stream it in a whole new place.

Wait, What About the Sequel?

Here’s where things get murky (and honestly, a bit awkward): This was supposed to be just chapter one of a planned four-part saga. Costner actually finished 'Chapter 2'—it premiered at the Venice International Film Festival back in September 2024, then popped up again at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival in early 2025. So, you’d think there would be no trouble rolling it out, right? Not so fast.

Thanks to the seriously underwhelming returns of the first film, the brakes have been slammed hard by Warner Bros.—the powers-that-be at New Line Cinema. Right now, 'Chapter 2' is basically sitting on a shelf somewhere, its fate in limbo. As for parts three and four? At this stage, it’d take a miracle (or an unexpected streaming surge) for those to ever see daylight. Costner’s definitely feeling the burn, considering how much of his own cash is tied up.

'It was clearly just the set-up for the bigger picture. As such, there was little payoff, which led to poor word of mouth.'

Who’s Actually in This Thing?

  • Kevin Costner
  • Sienna Miller
  • Sam Worthington
  • Michael Rooker
  • Luke Wilson
  • Jena Malone
  • Danny Huston
  • Tatanka Means
  • And more—you get the idea: a sprawling cast for a sprawling movie.

Meanwhile, Costner isn’t hiding out: he’s back in front of the camera for a comedy-drama called 'Honeymoon with Harry,' due out (supposedly) in 2027. But as for the full 'Horizon' saga? Don’t hold your breath, unless Prime Video suddenly works some magic.
