Kate Hudson’s Oscar-nominated 2025 musical drama from Focus Features hits Netflix today, bringing her buzzed-about Best Actress turn—also up for a Golden Globe—to the streamer at last.

Kate Hudson's been having a bit of a moment lately – and if you didn't catch her 2025 musical drama 'Song Sung Blue' in cinemas (I wouldn't blame you, musical biopics are an acquired taste), it's just landed on Netflix in the UK. And yes, this is the film that got her up for Best Actress at the Oscars and the Golden Globes. Not bad going.

So, what exactly is 'Song Sung Blue'?

If you ever wondered what a Neil Diamond tribute band film would look like – and, let's be honest, you probably haven't – this is Hudson throwing herself into that exact world. She plays Claire Sardina, a real musician whose life story really is as surprising as it sounds. Hugh Jackman, still looking suspiciously good for his age, turns up as her husband and bandmate Mike Sardina. The film follows them slogging it out for nearly twenty years, together on-stage and off, balancing a romance and a not-exactly-glamorous tribute act career.

The cast is stacked: Michael Imperioli shows up, Ella Anderson's in there, and you'll spot King Princess, Mustafa Shakir, Hudson Hensley, Fisher Stevens, and Jim Belushi all doing their bit as well. You rarely see a line-up this weird and wonderful unless someone's lost track of who RSVP'd to a dinner party.

'Based on a true story, two down-on-their-luck musicians form a joyous Neil Diamond tribute band, proving it's never too late to find love and follow your dreams.'

How did this oddball of a film get made?

Craig Brewer (you might know him from 'Hustle & Flow' or the 'Coming 2 America' sequel) wrote and directed the thing, and couldn't resist producing it as well. He wasn't alone, though – John Davis and John Fox both signed on as producers. The whole project is, weirdly enough, based on Greg Kohs's 2008 documentary (which honestly did get a bit of a cult following). Kohs himself came on as executive producer, as did Erika Hampson.

Just for the die-hards who like knowing who did what:

  • Director of Photography: Amy Vincent
  • Composer: Scott Bomar
  • Editor: Billy Fox
  • Production Designer: Clay A. Griffith
  • Costume Designer: Ernesto Martinez

What else is Hudson up to?

Hudson's been bouncing around Netflix recently; she popped up in the latest season of the sports comedy 'Running Point', which already bagged a third season renewal. Next up, she's down for a leading role in a rom-com called 'Hello & Paris', where she'll star against Javier Bardem. No, you aren't imagining that – Hudson and Bardem, in a romantic comedy. Stranger things have happened, apparently.
