After two delays and a round of release-date musical chairs, Jordan Peele’s next film is finally back in motion at Universal.

Well, if you were starting to think Jordan Peele had vanished from the horror scene, not so fast. It has now been four years since Peele last got us all second-guessing our mates and neighbours with Nope, which, just to put it into context, is officially the longest break between Peele films to date—makes you realise how quickly he was turning them out before, really.

What’s Actually Going On With The Next Peele Film?

Here’s the story: Universal had originally set Peele’s still-untitled next film for a Christmas 2024 opening. Then the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes happened (cheers, Hollywood) and the whole thing got kicked down the road. Universal eventually rescheduled it for 23 October 2026—which sounded ages away, but at least it was on the calendar.

Cut to September 2025: Universal quietly yanked Peele’s film from their release slate. Warner Bros. wasted no time and slid right in to claim that vacant pre-Halloween slot for DC Studios' Clayface. So now, as it stands, there’s officially no release date for Peele’s next feature. No title, nothing—proper cloak-and-dagger stuff.

The Latest Update (And It’s Actually Good News)

However, if you’re twitchy about another endless horror director hiatus, Puck News is now reporting something positive—Peele has finished the script. Of course, in classic Peele fashion, every bit of plot is being kept on absolute lockdown.

Nothing public yet on casting or when it’ll actually hit cinemas, but word is we’ll be hearing news in the next few months. And yes, Universal is still set to distribute, the same as they did for all his previous films dating back to Get Out.

Peele: From Comedy To Horror Auteur

Quick refresher on Peele’s journey for those who need it: he started out on MadTV, then made a name for himself with Keegan-Michael Key in Key & Peele. Then, everything shifted when Get Out landed in 2017—critics and audiences fully lost their minds for it. The film grossed $255 million worldwide and scooped up four Oscar nominations, including a win for Best Original Screenplay. A reminder: first time director.

After Get Out came Us in 2019, and then Nope in 2022. Three films in, Peele’s already carved himself out as one of horror’s most recognisable names.

What’s He Been Doing Since?

Even though it’s been a quiet spell on the directing front, Peele hasn’t exactly been sitting on his hands. He’s been busy producing projects under his Monkeypaw Productions banner. The list includes:

  • Wendell & Wild
  • Monkey Man
  • Him
  • The Twilight Zone reboot for Paramount+
  • Hunters for Prime Video
  • Lovecraft Country for HBO

Monkeypaw also got caught up in the desperate studio bidding for the rights to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. They didn’t win that one (A24 nabbed it), but it shows where their ambitions are at.

Even More On The Peele Radar

If you’re the type who likes horror in all your entertainment, you’ll be pleased to hear that Peele is venturing into gaming as well. He’s collaborating with none other than Hideo Kojima (yes, Metal Gear Solid Kojima) on a survival horror video game called OD. Not a crossover you’d have called in your 2021 office sweepstake.

And Peele’s also teaming up with Sam Raimi to co-produce Portrait of God, which is a new horror film from Dylan Clark. That one is an expansion on Clark’s viral horror short and, naturally, Universal is involved.
