J. K. Simmons Nearly Turned Down Omni-Man, Invincible Star Reveals
J. K. Simmons nearly missed out on Omni-Man. Invincible’s creator says the veteran actor was first offered a different role before ultimately becoming Nolan Grayson, a twist he revealed on a recent podcast.
Here’s a little Hollywood trivia for you: J.K. Simmons, the unmistakable voice (and mustache) of Nolan Grayson, a.k.a. Omni-Man on Invincible, almost wound up voicing a completely different character. If you’re surprised, you’re not alone—apparently, even the show’s creator kind of laughs about it now.
Wait, J.K. Simmons Wasn’t Always Omni-Man?
On a recent episode of 'The Escape Pod' podcast, Robert Kirkman (the guy who created both the Invincible comic and the show) shared a fun bit of casting history. Originally, when Simmons was first approached, it wasn’t to play the super-powered, mustache-twirling father. Nope—the creative team had a totally different character in mind.
The hosts started speculating and name-dropped Cecil Stedman (you know, the gravel-voiced leader of the Global Defense Agency), and Kirkman basically confirmed it: 'It might've been Cecil,' he said, chuckling. The story gets better—Simmons read the script, turned around, and said something to the effect of:
'I would rather play Omni-Man.'
According to Kirkman, the team basically shrugged and said, yeah, that works for us.
Simmons Makes the Call
Kirkman couldn’t help but point out how rare it is for an actor (especially one with an Oscar on the shelf) to read a script and say, 'Mmm… not that role, I’ll take this one instead.' For the record, Walton Goggins ended up as Cecil, and—let’s be honest—he absolutely nails that weirdly likable conniving energy.
What Simmons Said (and Didn’t Know)
Simmons himself confirmed this story in a 2024 interview with GQ. He admitted he just didn’t see himself as the original character they pitched—he thought he’d rather hang back. A few months later, the call came to play Omni-Man, and he was in.
What’s really wild? When Simmons first agreed to voice Nolan, he apparently had no idea what a twisted character arc he was signing up for. Looking at the first couple of scripts, he figured it was a pretty cool dad role—classic case of 'wait until episode 1 ends.'
And Where’s the Show Now?
- All episodes of Invincible Season 4 are available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
- Season 5 is coming… but you might need to be very patient—the current rumor is sometime in 2027.
So next time you hear Simmons roar 'Mark!' in that world-ending way only he can, remember: we almost got a very different voice behind that cape.
