The runway could extend to a trilogy as The Devil Wears Prada 2 director David Frankel leaves the door open for a third film and a potential Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway reunion.

If you thought the surprise return of Prada-mania with The Devil Wears Prada 2 meant Hollywood had finally run out of reboots and legacy sequels, I have news: things may not be over yet. After the second film cleaned up at the box office, people are already buzzing about the possibility of a third movie. And now the director himself is weighing in.

Frankel Breaks the Sequel Rule (Again)

Director David Frankel recently shared his thoughts with Variety, and while he didn’t exactly announce The Devil Wears Prada 3, he also didn’t slam the door shut. Here’s how he put it:

"Look, it took us 20 years to do this one. And I said, 'Never again,' and here we are. So, I certainly would never say, 'Never again,' again. Let’s see what happens. If there was an opportunity to revisit the characters and to share a few months with these wonderful actors again, obviously, I’d love it."

Translation: nobody’s committing, but if the stars (and dollar signs) align, don’t be shocked if we see Miranda, Andy, and Emily back for a round three.

How We Got Here: The Second Act

The second film isn’t a reboot – it’s a classic legacy sequel, jumping about two decades after the original 2006 hit. Miranda, Andy, and Emily are all in very different places (grown-up problems, bigger careers, the inevitable existential crises), but it didn’t waste time shoving Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, and Emily Blunt back together. You can practically see the studio executives rubbing their hands together about the 'potential for a sequel.' If you’re wondering why these movies feel familiar: Frankel directed both films, and most of the key behind-the-scenes crew returned too (screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna, producer Wendy Finerman, cinematographer Florian Ballhaus, composer Theodore Shapiro, and production designer Jess Gonchor all came back for more high-fashion drama).

But What Would a Third Movie Even Be?

If they do another, they won’t have to make it up from scratch. Author Lauren Weisberger has already strung together a series: after the OG book (which both films are based on), she wrote two more – Revenge Wears Prada and When Life Gives You Lululemons. In the second book, Andy and Emily are now business partners (which, frankly, has all sorts of cutthroat workplace comedy potential), and the third one shifts the focus to Emily. So if the Pradaverse does expand again, there’s already some blueprint.

The Numbers Don’t Lie (Even If the Reviews Shrugged)

  • Budget for The Devil Wears Prada 2: around $100 million
  • Global box office haul so far: over $253 million
  • Critical reception: solidly… okay. Nothing spectacular, but still raking in ticket sales.

For Disney (who released the movie), breaking that quarter-billion-dollar mark was apparently enough for people to start pitching sequels to every movie they own. Not a huge surprise there.

If you want to catch the (possible) middle chapter of this saga, The Devil Wears Prada 2 is still doing the rounds in theaters right now. If you want to bet on whether a third film happens, well, I wouldn’t bet against it – especially with those box office numbers.
