House of the Dragon’s Episode 7 finally answers what became of Sheepstealer and Sunfyre — and the fallout shifts the war.

If you thought we'd already seen the peak of dragon mayhem on House of the Dragon, Season 3, Episode 7 just proved you a bit naive. They’ve finally delivered the kind of brutal, smoke-choked aerial clash that’s all teeth and wings—plus a surprise resurrection no one was betting on. This episode is precisely where the war tips, and it all pivots on Sheepstealer and Sunfyre.

Sheepstealer’s Close Call

The episode kicks off with Rhaenyra and Addam of Hull going full bloodhound, hunting down Daemon and Rhaena in the Vale. It doesn’t take long before the real highlight: Caraxes, Syrax, and Seasmoke ganging up on the notoriously hard-to-catch wild dragon, Sheepstealer. It’s a proper three-on-one scrap—no heroic solo duels here, just chaos in the sky.

Sheepstealer makes the first move on Syrax, but things spiral fast when Seasmoke and Caraxes get involved. It’s Caraxes who does the real damage, jaws around Sheepstealer’s neck and looking for all the world like he’ll finish it. The show teases a fatal end, but in a move that’s bound to fuel speculation all week, Daemon actually reins Caraxes in and spares Sheepstealer the death blow. The result: Sheepstealer retreats, in a sorry state, bleeding and grounded but not dead—limping off somewhere to lick his wounds. Rhaenyra meanwhile hauls Rhaena back to King’s Landing like a prize hostage. The not-quite-dead Sheepstealer clearly isn’t out of the story yet, especially with this wild dragon’s unpredictable allegiance and Rhaena still in the mix.

Sheepstealer survived a three-on-one dragon fight and crawled away, battered but breathing—hardly the last we’ll see of him.

Sunfyre’s Resurrection: Out of Nowhere

Then there’s Sunfyre, who pulls off the week’s biggest resurrection act. Aegon, surrounded and refusing to run, insists he’ll stand his ground as king—more stubborn than clever, arguably. Just as Rhaenyra’s troops are about to take the city, Sunfyre lumbers out of the trees, not dead after all, and torches a fair chunk of Team Black’s forces. Hundreds end up as dragon-charred reminders that House Targaryen’s pets don’t go quietly.

The show wastes no time highlighting the shock: Aegon’s cackling with wild relief as Tyland Lannister hits the deck, and Sunfyre shows up looking a bit worse for wear, but very much alive. Larys Strong, ever the survival expert, had already legged it before Sunfyre’s return. According to the series, Sunfyre had been in a sort of magical coma, healing up after taking serious wounds at Rook’s Rest. Unlike Meleys, who’s mouldering nearby, Sunfyre’s corpse was never decaying—just dormant. Since this is all rooted in George R. R. Martin’s lore, it fits that the dragon probably took advantage of livestock and stray corpses while offscreen to patch himself up.

Sunfyre’s big comeback is not just spectacle—it tips the odds, and not in Rhaenyra’s favour. She was already losing her grip thanks to Ulf the White stabbing her in the back and Aemond improbably dodging his mum’s poison attempt. Now with Sunfyre basically reborn, Black supporters are running out of good days. Oh, and there’s just one episode left this season, so expect even more carnage before anyone gets to catch their breath.
