How did Billy die in EastEnders? The tragedy that broke the Jacksons
Billie Jackson — originally spelt Billy — arrived in Walford in 1993 as the youngest of the Jackson clan, the little brother of Bianca, Robbie, and Sonia, played by Devon Anderson. He grew up on screen, left, and came back in 2010 as a young man. He didn't make it to the end of that year. Here's what happened.
The short answer
Billie died of alcohol poisoning in October 2010, on the night of his 22nd birthday. After drinking a full bottle of vodka at his own party at the Jackson house, he fell asleep on the sofa and was found dead the next morning. No accident, no villain, no warning — which is exactly why it hit viewers so hard.
The road that led there
His final year in Walford was a slow-motion pile-up:
- The gang — back in the Square, Billie fell in with a bad crowd, including a girl called Kylie.
- The shooting — a gun connected to Billie ended up being fired in the R&B club, and his uncle Jack Branning took a bullet meant for no one in particular. Jack survived; the guilt stuck to Billie.
- The army — desperate for a fresh start, Billie enlisted as a recruit, and it briefly looked like he'd found his way out.
- The party — home on leave, he celebrated his 22nd birthday with the family. The vodka was a gift from his cousin Lauren Branning.
The aftermath for the Jacksons
The fallout was brutal even by EastEnders standards. His mother Carol collapsed into grief and struggled to function at all, while Bianca couldn't shake the image of finding her brother. Whitney Dean, who'd been close to Billie, later discovered a text from him saying he loved her and wanted to make a go of things — sent before he died, read after.
Billie's father Alan Jackson and great-grandmother Blossom returned for the funeral, which aired on 29 October 2010, with both original actors reprising their roles for the send-off.
Was it a big episode at the time?
Very. The episode covering Billie's death was nominated for Best Single Episode at the 2011 British Soap Awards, and Devon Anderson picked up an Emerging Talent nomination at the 2011 Screen Nation Awards for his performance.
