Following the latest House of the Dragon cliffhanger, where a key Team Black player seemed to die, fans are leaning on book canon and hints to cry foul.

If you've been keeping up with House of the Dragon, you'll know the show doesn't exactly play it safe with its cliffhangers. The latest one—at the end of Season 3, Episode 6—was a proper head-scratcher. The episode closed in typical HBO fashion, with a beloved character in real peril and no confirmation either way. Naturally, fans exploded online with theories about what really went down and whether we've seen the last of a core Team Black name. If you're not caught up, spoilers ahead.

The Night Attack

So, let's talk about those last minutes. Corlys Velaryon—that's the Sea Snake himself—had just brought his fleet back to support Rhaenyra, trying to gain the upper hand as the war rages. In what passes for a quiet moment on this show, suddenly, bam: Ormund Hightower's forces spring an ambush led by Ser Jon Roxton. The odds aren't in Corlys' favour—he's outnumbered, choked out, gasping, and then the screen goes black. No dramatic final words, nothing, just a hard cut to credits.

House of the Dragon Season 3, Episode 7 premieres on 2 August.

Curiously, the showrunners never actually show Corlys dead—something House of the Dragon has form for, given the series already did a will-he-won't-he with Corlys after his sea battle injuries in earlier episodes. That earlier trick made plenty of people side-eye this latest cliffhanger. Has he really been killed off, or is it another ‘fooled you’?

Book vs. Show (and Fan Theories)

As soon as the episode ended, the speculation machine kicked off on social media. Fans started rewatching key scenes, revisiting George R.R. Martin's source material—Fire & Blood—and picking apart every little hint. In the book, Corlys is technically one of the few major characters who rides out the Dance of the Dragons in one piece. That point hasn't gone unnoticed by readers.

One X user, @htodrecap, insisted, "No, he does not die during the war. Corlys is one of the few main leaders who survives the entire civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons."

Others chimed in, pointing out that being captured is very much on the cards, but an outright death so soon would be a serious departure. Another fan, @dauntlesseskimo, argued that it was probably an arrest we witnessed: "Maybe he was arrested in Episode 6; I believe we shall see more of him in Episode 7."

Cliffhanger endings are now part of House of the Dragon's DNA, which has made viewers even more reluctant to mourn Corlys before we actually see a body—or at least a very conclusive scene. Whether he's dead or just caught up in another trick is something we'll only find out when Episode 7 lands this August.
