X-Men ’97 signs off with a bruising season 2 finale on Disney+ that kills off a beloved character.

X-Men ’97 just wrapped up its second series on Disney+, and — fair warning — it’s a bit of a gut punch. The finale doesn’t just deliver the usual mutant-on-mutant mayhem; it manages to end with a genuine shock, taking out a major fan favourite in a last-minute act of heroism. The show’s never been afraid of a few big swings, but this one’s going to hit longtime viewers right where it hurts.

The showdown, in summary

The episode — ‘Survival of the Fittest’ — has the team pulling out all the stops to rescue Gambit, who’s currently occupied by Apocalypse. So, Rogue, Beast and Nightcrawler hop over to Apocalypse’s celestial ship to try to prise Remy loose. There they bump into Eson the Searcher (yes, a literal Celestial, because apparently no cosmic scale is too big for the X-Men these days) — the one responsible for Apocalypse’s latest upgrade.

Rogue, never one for half-measures, promptly offers herself up to Eson in exchange for Gambit’s life. Eson, after the usual cosmic deliberation, grants her some spectacular powers for what’s billed as ‘one last fight’. All this is playing out while Cable and Valerie Cooper are busy launching a separate assault on Xavier’s property, aiming to neutralise Gambit/Apocalypse once and for all. Cable, dead set on putting Apocalypse in the ground, completely ignores his parents’ advice (because when have the Summers clan ever had a normal family disagreement?). The whole thing turns into a mutant standoff with former friends now at each other’s throats.

X-Men ’97’s Season 2 finale dropped on Disney+ with a devastating twist: Nightcrawler sacrifices himself to save Rogue, leaving fans reeling.

Where everyone lands (or doesn’t)

Good news first: both Rogue and Gambit survive. Remy eventually snaps out of Apocalypse’s clutches and gets back in the fight. Rogue returns stronger than ever, puts Apocalypse down for good, and drops his essence-in-a-stone (don’t ask) straight into Cable’s hands, trusting he’ll know how to contain it for now. She and Remy get a moment to catch their breath — but it’s hardly a happy reunion.

Now, the blow: Nightcrawler. Turns out he’s seen what Rogue’s about to sacrifice, and, in a quietly moving moment, decides to take her place. Offscreen, Kurt makes a deal with Eson, stepping in to complete the bargain. So while Rogue walks away battered but alive, Kurt — Nightcrawler — is the one who’s paid the bill. Beast hands Rogue a Bible belonging to Kurt as the team comes to terms with what just happened. It’s not a death played up with big fireworks, but it lands all the same. Gratuitous, maybe, but it’s exactly the sort of storytelling swing that’s kept X-Men ’97 from feeling like just another nostalgia-fest.

  • Nightcrawler’s sacrifice is the major turning point — he gives up his life to save Rogue, with Eson accepting the trade in the show’s final act.
