Halo season 3 could find a second life after Paramount+ cancellation
Halo isn’t done on screen just yet. As Xbox turns 25, EVP Matt Booty teased fresh adaptation plans that could give the franchise new life in Hollywood even after Paramount Plus axed the series.
If you thought Halo was headed for the video game graveyard following Paramount+'s abrupt cancellation of the live-action series—well, Xbox might have other ideas. There’s been a flurry of cryptic but decidedly hopeful hints from the Xbox bigwigs, and the timing is suspiciously convenient: just as they’re toasting 25 years of the Xbox brand and shouting from the rooftops about Hollywood crossovers, Halo is back in mainstream chatter. Is a new adaptation really on the cards, or is this just empty PR noise?
A Bungled Cancel, a Surprise Comeback
Let’s get the quick recap sorted out: Paramount+ axed their Halo series after two seasons, to the surprise of precisely no one who actually watched it. Yet, in a plot twist nobody saw coming, Netflix picked up the streaming rights, dumped the show onto its homepage, and suddenly Halo shot up the streaming Top 10 like Master Chief hitting the overshield. Turns out if you put enough marketing pixels on the screen, even mixed reviews won't keep people away from a sci-fi space helmet.
Xbox Swears They're Not Done With Halo
Enter Matt Booty, Xbox’s executive VP and keeper of the corporate hype train. In a new interview, Booty made it crystal clear that Microsoft isn’t shelving the franchise any time soon:
'Halo, first and foremost, is one of our biggest franchises. It’s iconic to Xbox and we’re certainly going to invest going forward.'
That’s corporate-speak for 'don’t write Halo’s TV obituary just yet.'
The Broader Xbox-Hollywood Plot
Xbox is far from content just sitting on its game library these days. The company now claims it’s got over a dozen movie and TV projects somewhere in the development pipeline, which, let’s be honest, could mean anything from a real script to someone doodling the logo on a napkin at lunch.
- Minecraft Movie: Number five on the global box office chart for 2025. That’s not a typo, they actually made it work.
- Fallout on Amazon: Allegedly the second most-watched TV show in Amazon’s history after its second run. If you like your dystopias with a dollop of nuclear satire, there you go.
- Upcoming: A live-action Gears of War film at Netflix, and—because pirates are still a thing—a Sea of Thieves movie is also in the works.
Xbox’s new CEO, Asha Sharma, has been extra vocal about turning these gaming properties into cultural touchstones well beyond the Xbox dashboard. In her own words (and this is an actual quote):
'We’ve got the number two show of all time on Amazon, Minecraft was top 5 in 2025, Call of Duty is bigger than the Marvel Cinematic Universe.'
A Side-Quest: Halo Video Game Reboot
Meanwhile, at Xbox’s big summer showcase, they rolled out 'Halo: Campaign Evolved', a new game that’s basically a remake of the original classic that got the whole franchise started 25 years ago. Expect it on 28 July 2026, just in time to remind everyone why Halo was worth Hollywood’s attention in the first place.
So, to piece it all together: Paramount+ may have dropped the ball with Halo season three, but Xbox’s top brass are making a lot of noise about investing in the franchise’s future on screen, not just with games. Given recent success stories and a busy adaptation slate, anyone betting on Halo’s media death might want to hold their horses.
