Hacks Final Season Premieres on HBO Max — But Creators Hint It’s Not Goodbye
Hacks premiered its fifth and final season on HBO Max on April 9, 2026, but creators Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky are already hinting the Emmy-winning comedy could return in a reboot.
Well, it looks like Hacks might finally be headed for the exit – at least for now. The fifth season just dropped on HBO Max starting April 9, 2026, and if you believe the headlines, that could be the end of the road. But, as fans know, saying goodbye in TV-land is usually anything but definitive.
'Never Say Never' from the Creators
In a recent interview, the trio behind the show – Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky – made it clear they aren’t exactly slamming the door shut. When asked point blank if the story was finished, they all kind of laughed and said, 'We would never say never. We love these characters, we love this world, we love everybody in the ensemble. Right now we feel good about going out without overstaying our welcome – but you won’t have to twist my arm.'
If there’s any hesitation, it sounds more like a classic case of the “never say never” safety valve. Translation: The show is wrapping up, but don’t rule out something popping back up – if the demand or inspiration is there.
The Cast Seems Game
Turns out, the folks on camera are just as open-minded about a comeback. Hannah Einbinder, who plays Ava Daniels, put it simply: 'Of course I would. Any excuse to be with my people.'
And then there’s Megan Stalter (Kayla Schaefer) who chimed in with, 'I’d come back for free. Or $5 million that I can share with the cast.' (Frankly, if they pass a 'Hacks' reboot bucket around, I know a lot of fans who’d pitch in.)
Hacks: The Big Picture
The series first showed up back in May 2021 and pretty much made friends everywhere – critics, fans, the Emmys, you name it. Seasons 1, 2, and now 5 all somehow held on to perfect 100% scores on Rotten Tomatoes, which is not normal. Even seasons 3 and 4 only dipped to 98%, so the show averages a jaw-dropping 99% over all five seasons. To put it bluntly: this show is about as close to a consensus hit as anything on TV right now.
- Jean Smart stars as Deborah Vance, your classic tough-as-nails comedy legend
- Hannah Einbinder is Ava, a whip-smart (and sometimes sharp-tongued) outcast comedy writer
- Carl Clemons-Hopkins plays Marcus Vaughan
- Paul W. Downs is Jimmy LuSaque Jr.
- Rose Abdoo turns up as Josefina
- Mark Indelicato fills the role of Damien Asada Agosto
Not for nothing, both Smart and Einbinder have walked away with Emmys for their work here – no surprise, if you’ve been watching since the beginning.
What’s Next?
One interesting tidbit coming out of that same interview: Aniello, Downs, and Statsky have another project brewing with HBO, but they’re keeping it under wraps for now. So if you’re hoping to follow their brand of comedy after Hacks, keep an eye out (and expect them to play their cards close to the chest for a while).
For now, Hacks season 5 is rolling out new episodes every Thursday. Will this actually be the curtain call? Maybe – but the squad’s not exactly making any dramatic exits. They seem just as open as the rest of us to letting the story (and those wild, lovable characters) pick up again down the line.
