After years of stop-start drama, the once-cancelled Clueless TV sequel suddenly looks alive again — and there’s a concrete step suggesting it might actually happen.

If you’ve been following the long-running will-they-won’t-they saga of a Clueless TV comeback, you’ll know it’s been on the cards in one way or another for what feels like ages. Now, there’s finally a proper sign of life — with real cash changing hands.

California has awarded the Clueless sequel series a production tax credit as one of just nine new TV projects picked in the latest round.

Back From the Brink

This new series is, yes, based on the 1995 film Clueless, and it’s been a bumpy ride. Originally set up at Peacock in early 2025, things fell apart this past April when the streamer gave it the chop. That looked like the end of it — but Paramount+ swooped in, taking over the project and transforming it into a six-episode 'limited event' series. If that sounds fancy for 'short reboot', well, yes.

The Governor’s office in California is all smiles about this, thanks to the state’s Film and Television Tax Credit Program. As Variety notes, Clueless is one of just nine TV shows in this selected batch to land the government tax perks. Alongside it you’ve got The Rockford Files, Newlyweds, and Love Comes Softly. We’re told these projects are expected to splash out a chunky $608 million in direct spend across California and rack up 1,014 filming days — which, yes, would keep a lot of crew off the breadline for a good while.

Who's Making It Happen

So, what about who’s involved this time? Robert Lawrence, the original film's producer, is back producing again. The writing and show-running duties are split between Josh Schwartz, Stephanie Savage, and Jordan Weiss — all three will exec produce, too. Amy Heckerling, who directed the original film, is also signing on as an executive producer.

The really important bit: Alicia Silverstone is confirmed to don the yellow again as Cher Horowitz (and executive produces to boot). So despite all the years and reincarnations, you’re getting the original Cher. The rest of the cast is still under wraps, so no word yet on whether any other familiar faces are joining the fray. Someone's probably fielding calls from Paul Rudd's agent as we speak.

  • The new Clueless series was originally developed at Peacock in 2025, canned in April 2026, and moved to Paramount+ as a six-episode limited series.
  • Filming starts in Los Angeles in 2027.
  • The California state government estimates $608 million in total production spend from the nine new shows awarded tax credits, with over 1,000 days of California filming among them.

There’s still no word on an official release date or what the actual plot will be (or if anyone’s learned to finally pronounce 'Alaïa'). But production is officially moving ahead in 2027 — which, for a series that’s been shuffled around as much as this one, actually counts as progress.
