Finally, Henry Cavill’s Warhammer 40,000 series takes a big step at Amazon
Amazon MGM Studios has officially confirmed it’s developing a Warhammer 40,000 series, with a very familiar superfan steering the project from behind the camera.
Bit of news straight from the world of grimdark sci-fi and galaxy-sized shoulder pads: Amazon MGM Studios are putting their weight behind a big new animated event series set in the world of Warhammer 40,000. And yes, Henry Cavill is onboard, not just as a bloke lending his face, but actually as executive producer.
Warhammer 40,000 is the first ever animated series for the franchise, now in the works at Amazon MGM Studios.
If you’ve missed it, Warhammer 40,000 – or 40k for those who know their Guardsmen from their gene-seed – is basically Britain’s house blend of tabletop miniatures, military sci-fi, and lashings of gothic melodrama. To say it’s got a cult following is underselling it: this is a universe so deep even the orks have lawyers.
The detail that’ll get most people to perk up is Henry Cavill’s involvement. Long-time superfan, absolutely obsessed with the tabletop side, and now he’s stepping up as executive producer on the series. Cavill’s geek credentials are solid (he genuinely paints his own minis), so this isn’t just a celeb cashing in.
Amazon grabbing the rights and putting it under the MGM Studios umbrella is a biggish swing. They're pitching this as an 'event series'—meaning, presumably, not just a one-off side project tossed onto Prime Video for die-hards, but something they're serious about. Animated, mind, not live action (yet), so expect a bit more creative freedom and hopefully less awkwardness than some other recent franchise adaptations we could name.
What we know so far
- Warhammer 40,000 animated series in active development at Amazon MGM Studios
- Henry Cavill on board as executive producer; no voice cast or directors announced yet
- No word on release date, likely still early stages—no first look, no trailers, just the announcement for now
- This will be the first ever animated series for Warhammer 40,000 on this scale (aside from fan projects and mini web series flitting around online)
No idea yet on which corner of the 40k universe they're tackling. With 40k, you've got everything from Space Marines to Inquisitors, actual gods, possibly even a Custodes or two if they want to go big. No confirmation whether Cavill will be lending a voice to any power-armoured nutters, but safe bet he gets involved in one way or another.
This is a developing story, so expect more details to trickle out, probably well before any actual episodes hit the server. For now: official, happening, Cavill confirmed, and Amazon’s clearly in for more than just a quick video game adaptation cash-in.
