It: Welcome to Derry season 2 may not premiere until 2028
It: Welcome to Derry showrunner Brad Caleb Kane teases a more terrifying Season 2 — and drops a major update on when we’ll get it.
If you’ve been watching for any news about It: Welcome to Derry Season 2, there’s finally some movement — and, to be honest, it’s a bit of a wait. Series boss Brad Caleb Kane has confirmed an updated timeline, and there are a few big changes afoot this time around.
‘We’re actively writing (Season 2) right now. We’re starting to shoot in the summer of next year.’
Kane gave that update in a recent interview while he was actually promoting his Friday the 13th prequel, not Derry itself. So, if you’re hoping to see Pennywise back on telly before you’ve gone grey, you’re going to need a bit of patience: Season 2 is now aiming for a premiere either late 2027 or in 2028. HBO’s not making anything official just yet, but that’s the window Kane’s teasing, based on when cameras actually start rolling.
Season 2 is now lined up for a release somewhere between late 2027 and 2028.
New Era, New Horrors
The next series doesn’t pick up after the last; it goes further back. Kane says Season 2 is set a full twenty-seven years before the first season, landing the story smack in Depression-era America. Don’t expect familiar faces (other than the obvious nightmare fuel) — he promised ‘new kids, new characters, maybe some old characters, and the same old Pennywise.’ So Bill Skarsgård is back in the clown suit, but the rest of the cast is getting a shuffle.
Kane is ditching his co-showrunner from last year, Jason Fuchs, and will be running the show solo. He’s described the next batch of episodes as just as scary as the first round, possibly more — which, frankly, isn’t a bad sales pitch if you’re doing a show about immortal killer clowns.
Who’s Steering This Circus?
It: Welcome to Derry sits in that awkward space between spin-off and prequel, connecting back to Andy and Barbara Muschietti’s adaptations of Stephen King’s original 1986 novel. Both Muschiettis are back as exec producers for this second round, along with Kane, Roy Lee, Dan Lin, Jamie Travis, and Dhana Gilbert. The Muschiettis recently put out what’s basically the standard ‘honoured and excited’ statement, saying continuing to play in King’s world remains ‘an absolute privilege.’
- The new season is set 27 years before Season 1, taking place during the Great Depression
- Brad Caleb Kane now serves as sole showrunner
- Bill Skarsgård returns as Pennywise
- Season 2 shooting starts summer 2027
- Expected release is late 2027 or 2028
