Twin Peaks vibes for Crystal Lake season 2? That's the showrunner's tease
Crystal Lake’s Brad Caleb Kane is already cooking up Season 2 — and teasing a surprising influence that could tilt this Friday the 13th prequel somewhere deliciously strange.
Here we go: Crystal Lake, the Friday the 13th prequel, has just dropped all eight episodes over on Peacock, and if you’re anything like me, you’re already wondering where the show goes from here. The bloke running the ship, Brad Caleb Kane, is apparently two steps ahead: he’s talking possible season 2 ideas before the splatter’s even dried on the first.
Back to the Lake (Again)
If you’ve dipped your toes into Crystal Lake’s chilly waters, you’ll know it’s not just a nostalgia trip. The show goes heavy on callbacks — same area as the original film, recognisable sets, and a bunch of familiar faces.
- Linda Cardellini takes the lead as a younger, grief-stricken Pamela Voorhees.
- Some characters return from the slasher classic, now recast: Trudy the diner owner (Bernadette Quigley, stepping in for Dorothy Kobs), cop Dorf (Cameron Scoggins, originally Ron Millkie), and the town’s doomsayer Crazy Ralph (Nick Cordileone, after Walt Gorney).
- There are newbies too: Chief Levon Brooks (William Catlett), his journalist sister Brianna (Devin Kessler), and single local Rita (Joy Suprano).
The first season digs into Pamela’s backstory, sure, but Kane’s clear that he doesn’t just want to stick with Jason’s mum. In his chat with Deadline, he explained why these B-characters and Crystal Lake’s weird little world matter to him:
Here’s Kane in his own words, talking about why he keeps coming back:
'I mean, this is a world that I return to over and over and over again. I return to these movies, we all do, somehow. They became iconic for a reason. But there’s a lot we don’t know about the town. We meet these really colorful characters in the first movie, we meet Trudy and Officer Dorf and so-called Crazy Ralph, even though he turns out to have a point. But we don’t see that much of them ultimately. Some are dispatched, some are just there for momentary common comic relief. And, you know, with a show like this, we have the opportunity to open it up and spend a little more time with them. Everybody loves a small-town show, and within the world of Friday the 13th, that just becomes more amplified and interesting.'
Season 2? Think Twin Peaks, But Wetter
So, what about a second series? No green light yet, but Kane’s already got it mapped out in his mind. He’s keen on pushing into a more offbeat ‘Twin Peaks-y’ direction, focusing on the town’s oddballs and, let’s be honest, probably finding even more creative ways for them to get horribly murdered. But he insists the heart (or should I say the hockey mask) of the story is still Pamela and Jason, no matter how weird things get elsewhere.
And for anyone wondering if we’re eventually going to catch up with the events of the original 1980 film, Kane says: not so fast. The first season’s set a full eight years before Pamela kicks off the whole infamous killing spree. He does hope to eventually bridge the gap, but—unless Peacock gets trigger-happy with renewals—it’s a few seasons off yet. Linda Cardellini, by the way, has already joked she’ll play Pam until she 'kills every resident' of Crystal Lake. The commitment’s real.
The first season of Crystal Lake landed on Peacock as a complete box set, with all eight episodes available right from the start.
On a side note, when Peacock first got their hands on this show, Bryan Fuller (the original showrunner, before Kane) said a second series was practically locked in from the start. Apparently, Peacock would have to cough up a penalty if they didn’t order one. Let's see if that financial stick still gets waved around.
