The BBC is shaking up Doctor Who, axing the Christmas special and retooling the series as showrunner Russell T Davies exits.

If you thought Doctor Who would be living happily ever after in the hands of Russell T Davies and Bad Wolf, the rug's just been well and truly yanked. There’s been proper chaos behind the scenes, and now, no less than the annual Christmas special has been pulled. Not just that, Davies himself is bowing out. It’s all change in the world of time travel, monsters, and sonic screwdrivers—and not necessarily in a way that’ll please fans.

The End of the Davies Era (Again)

In case you lost track over the past two decades (no judgement), a quick run-through:

  • Doctor Who’s original stint was 1963-1989, with lots of men in dodgy wigs and wobbly sets.
  • After a sixteen-year snooze, Russell T Davies revived it in 2005, making it a proper telly event again. He shepherded it until 2010.
  • Then Steven Moffat (2010-2017) and Chris Chibnall (2018 onwards) each took their shot, with varying results depending on which forum you lurk on.
  • In 2021, the production company Bad Wolf joined the party to co-produce alongside BBC, and Davies returned for the 60th anniversary in 2023.

Disney+ even got involved for two seasons, but by October, they’d split from the BBC. The broadcaster, for its part, was still banging on about their commitment to Doctor Who—even tossing out promises of a new ‘spectacular’ Christmas special in 2026, with Davies at the helm. If only it was that simple.

And Then, Suddenly, No Christmas

Now, scrap those earlier promises. The latest from both Davies and Bad Wolf is that they're out, along with the big festive episode. Fans only learned the grim news because Deadline reported the move, and then Davies himself took to social media to stick a little bow on the whole business. Here’s the gist, straight from the man who (re)invented modern Who:

'And so GOODBYE from me to Doctor Who but HELLO to a big new future for the show, as the BBC announces it’s putting the show out to tender. As a result, there won’t be a Christmas Special – we only cooked that up to guarantee a future when no one knew what would happen, but now we do know, there’s no need for it. You’ll have to wait a bit longer for new Doctor Who… but you’ll be waiting for MORE Doctor Who than a one-off. So it’s worth it! For the record: there was no script, I never wrote it, and no actor was ever approached to play the next Doctor. You may disagree; fine, sit in that chair and wait to be proved right. You’ll wait a lonnng time. Now I’m as excited as anyone to see what comes next! Will they keep the theme tune? Will they lose the blue box? Will they bring back the Drahvin?! It’s all up for grabs, which is so Doctor Who, exciting and unpredictable and new! Here comes the future, vworp vworp.'

So that’s that: no secret scripts, no hush-hush new Doctor, no 'will-they-won’t-they' to speculate on. And yes, if you were hoping for a big festive regeneration or meaningful links with previous Doctors, better temper your expectations.

The TARDIS on Tender

This is where it gets bureaucratic. The BBC’s official line is that, in order to plan for Doctor Who’s next phase (and likely meet all those teetering boxes on the BBC’s Charter), the series is going out to competitive tender this year. Translation: outside producers and companies can now pitch to take the reins.

The statement from the Beeb was classic PR, basically: the special’s off, it was a tough decision, don’t panic, it’s all about a glorious future, etc. First priority is making sure Doctor Who’s long-term prospects are set before worrying about a single Christmas hour.

That Season Finale Cliffhanger

If you watched the latest series, you’ll know it went out on a bit of a ‘what-was-that?’ note, with Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor apparently regenerating into Billie Piper’s Rose Tyler—of all people, a throwback companion. There had been a lot of chatter that the Christmas special would wrap up these odd loose threads, but with no Christmas episode on the cards, all bets are off for where the story actually goes next.
