Deadliest Catch Drops Season 22 Premiere Date as the Show Confronts Todd Meadows’ Tragic Death
Deadliest Catch sets sail for Season 22 with a premiere date and new trailer, as Discovery Channel addresses the death of crew member Todd Meadows and how the fleet carries on.
Well, Deadliest Catch is kicking off its 22nd season, and even for a show built on danger and disaster, this year hits different. There’s every kind of can-you-believe-it twist: a tragedy that shakes the whole cast, a gigantic crab migration, and even a bit of role-reversal drama among the longtime captains. You’ve got questions? Here’s what you should know before you tune in.
When It’s Back – and Where It’s Going
Discovery is rolling out Season 22 on Friday, May 8, at 8 p.m. Eastern/Pacific. The Emmy-magnet (63 nominations, if anyone’s counting) isn’t just returning to the same old Bering Sea grounds. Nope, this year the fleet’s heading out 225 miles to St. George Island, because a new population of red king crab suddenly popped up far to the north. There’s big money on the line, so all the seasoned captains are ditching familiar territory for some pretty unforgiving (and likely frozen) waters.
What’s New on the Boats?
With the crabs on the move, the show’s not just about the usual personalities. Captain Sig Hansen is apparently channeling his inner spy, launching a sneaky scouting mission with an underwater drone to scope out the crabs before everyone else. Meanwhile, 'Wild Bill' Wichrowski hauls himself and the rest of the crew over to the wilds of St. George, playing navigator in a landscape none of them really know.
Addressing the Unthinkable: Todd Meadows’ Death
Here’s where things get heavy. Deckhand Todd Meadows, who joined the Aleutian Lady in May 2025 while filming the season’s latter half, died on February 25 after going overboard. His cause of death was listed as 'drowning with probable hypothermia' from 'submersion of body in cold water'—basically, the kind of risk that’s lurked over every episode, now heartbreakingly real. Authorities in Alaska called it an accident.
According to Discovery, while there were cameras on the Aleutian Lady at the time, they’ve decided—out of respect for Meadows’ family—that his death will not be shown. The premiere episode will instead include a tribute, and you’ll see more of Todd’s work with the crew throughout the season, along with how his passing affected not just the Aleutian Lady but the whole fishing community.
'Discovery will not air any footage of Todd’s death, out of respect for his family and loved ones.'
Season 22’s Wild Card: Jake Anderson’s Rough Reset
File this under 'things you don’t see every season'—Jake Anderson, usually steering his own boat, finds himself back as a deckhand for the first time in over a decade. Why? He lost both his boat and his marriage. But (because this is TV), fate hands him a chance to get behind the wheel of none other than the Cornelia Marie—if you know, you know.
Main Cast & Crew Shakeups (Quick Recap)
- Sig Hansen: covert crab-chasing, drone-in-hand
- 'Wild Bill' Wichrowski: guiding the fleet to new, icy territory
- Todd Meadows: honored posthumously after tragic accident
- Jake Anderson: demoted to deckhand, then gets his redemption shot
- The Aleutian Lady and Cornelia Marie: still central to the drama
The Bottom Line
Deadliest Catch isn’t exactly toning things down. Between a new frontier for crab hauls and very real human loss, Season 22 might be the most unpredictable one yet. Fremantle’s Original Productions is still behind the scenes for Discovery, and, frankly, I’ll be watching for both the big-money stakes and how the show handles its most gut-wrenching moments to date.
