DC’s Supergirl Runtime Reportedly Revealed — And It’s Among The Studio’s Shortest Superhero Films
Supergirl is reportedly flying in with a brisk runtime, making it one of DC’s shortest superhero movies in years.
DC is lining up Supergirl to hit UK cinemas on 26 June, and it looks like they've made an interesting call with the runtime. According to the Irish Film Classification Office, this one 'sits bang on 1 hour, 47 minutes and 55 seconds' – to be annoyingly precise. Basically, just under 1 hour and 48 minutes. Now, for a modern superhero film, that verges on brisk. Especially when you compare it to what usually feels like a part-time shift at the multiplex with some of these recent comic book juggernauts.
Is a Shorter Superhero Movie Actually a Problem?
No, it really isn't. Length isn't quality, as anyone who's survived a three-hour slog knows perfectly well. There are examples all over the place of lean, well-paced action films – and nobody calls Kiru 'flimsy' just because it's not three hours. Even Blood: The Last Vampire comes in under an hour and still manages the job brilliantly. If DC thinks Supergirl's story is all wrapped after 108 minutes, I'll take an efficient film over a baggy one every time.
What the Story’s All About
This new Supergirl is helmed by Craig Gillespie, with a script from Ana Nogueira, and it’s lifted directly from the ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ comics run by Tom King and Bilquis Evely. The plot kicks off when Ruthye Marye Knoll's father is murdered and the killer’s still out somewhere. Ruthye, being young, rather alien, and absolutely determined, enlists the help of Kara Zor-El herself for a fairly unforgiving mission of revenge. And if Supergirl doesn’t play ball, she’ll just get bloody on her own terms. It sounds more like a space western than the typical city-smashing DC affair.
Also, the film strays from the comics by adding Jason Momoa as Lobo. He wasn't in the original storyline, so it'll be curious to see what he brings – apart from the inevitable Mumbling Behemoth Energy and, presumably, plenty of motorbike antics in space.

Style Points (Or, Yes, It Looks a Bit Like Guardians)
The trailer’s visuals do flirt with those James Gunn Guardians of the Galaxy vibes, but honestly, that’s no shock now that Gunn basically runs the DC show. Whether you find that 'fresh and breezy' or 'a bit too familiar' depends how much you like your cosmic superhero outings with a splash of neon and swagger.
Quick Quote That Sums It Up
'If 1 hour and 48 minutes is all DC needs to tell Kara's solo story, then so be it. Supergirl looks awesome, and I know enough about the story from reading the comics to feel excited about what’s to come when the film reaches cinemas later this month.'
That’s all the key details on Supergirl’s upcoming run, both on screen and in the projection booth stopwatch stakes.
