Oscar winner Daniel Kaluuya is ending his four-year live-action hiatus, signing on for Amazon MGM Studios' The Parlay and reuniting with an acclaimed director he’s worked with before.

Daniel Kaluuya is finally heading back to live-action films, which, if you ask me, has taken far too long. After a noticeable four-year absence from on-screen roles, the British actor is set to make his return—and he’s getting the band back together with a rather significant director again.

Back with Shaka King for Another Crime Thriller

Here’s the main thing: Kaluuya has officially signed on for a new live-action project, The Parlay, which is being produced by Amazon MGM Studios. What’s interesting is he’s not just starring—he’s teaming up again with Shaka King, the director who made quite a splash with Judas and the Black Messiah back in 2021.

If you remember, that film was a big deal: not only was it critically acclaimed, but it also landed Kaluuya his first Oscar, taking home Best Supporting Actor for his role as Fred Hampton. Bit of trivia—Shaka King also picked up a Best Picture nomination as producer, so clearly these two know what they’re doing together.

Kaluuya’s Whereabouts Since Nope

Kaluuya’s last proper live-action role was in Jordan Peele’s Nope (2022), and since then he’s been more or less off the live-action scene. If you’ve been wondering where he disappeared to, here’s a quick rundown:

  • Lent his voice to Hobie Brown (aka Spider-Punk) for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023), which, yes, was massive, but he never actually showed up in person.
  • Co-directed The Kitchen, so he’s not just sitting on his hands.

But if you’re itching for more Kaluuya actually in front of the camera, it’s been a bit of a drought.

What’s the Story with The Parlay?

Details on The Parlay are, frankly, being kept suspiciously quiet. Officially, nobody’s saying anything specific about the plot, but the signs point towards another crime thriller. Given what he and King managed with Judas and the Black Messiah, expectations are probably going to be unrealistically high—no pressure, lads.

Kaluuya’s Upcoming Projects: He’s Keeping Busy

If you think Kaluuya’s calendar looks a bit empty, think again. Besides The Parlay, he’s got a few irons in the fire:

  • He’ll turn up in A24’s Hotel Hotel Hotel Hotel (not a typo, that really is four hotels), directed by Michael Shanks. That one’s a thriller about a bloke waking up in a mysterious hotel room, trying to leg it.
  • Also cast in Misty Green, which Chris Rock is directing—another one to keep an eye on.
  • Helping to co-write a proper Spider-Punk film for Sony Pictures Animation.
  • Still producing a live-action Barney movie with his own company. I’m not going to pretend I saw that one coming.

No release window for The Parlay just yet, so it’s back to waiting—but at least now we know Daniel Kaluuya’s live-action comeback is actually happening.
