Criticism of Brave New World’s most divisive episode prompts response from Star Trek director
After Star Trek: Strange New World’s Season 4 drew mixed reactions to a divisive instalment, director Axelle Carolyn has addressed the criticism over its still-unanswered questions.
There's something rather delightful about seeing Star Trek: Strange New Worlds swing for the fences, even when it means absolutely splitting the fanbase down the middle. Case in point: the latest episode from Season 4, 'The Griffin Incident'. This one's turned out to be the marmite instalment of the run so far—properly divisive, with viewers lobbing opinions back and forth online.
Why Some Fans Are Unimpressed
This episode had the audacity to lean into full horror territory, with a mystery involving the USS Griffin and the Starfleet equivalent of the X-Files—a secretive squad called Division 12. It sounds fun on paper, but a crowd of old-school Trek purists weren't having it. Their gripe? Not enough answers. The hour set up plenty of questions, but left a few glaring ones swinging in the wind by the closing credits.
Director Axelle Carolyn—who, for the trivia nerds, is Belgian, not British—actually tackled this fan backlash head-on in a new sit-down with TrekMovie. She practically welcomed the scepticism, admitting she knows why some viewers crave a proper scientific tie-up before the credits roll. What she won't accept, though, is the notion that Trek must dot every i and cross every t on the spot.
Here's how Axelle Carolyn put it, when challenged about the show leaving mysteries unresolved:
They're just saying, within the scope of our investigation right now, we can't solve it.
Carolyn also insisted that even if the crew didn't crack the Griffin case this week, an explanation does exist in-universe—it's simply beyond them at present. And if this bends the usual rules of Trek storytelling, Carolyn is absolutely fine with that:
I can see how it breaks the mold of a lot of Star Trek episodes, but every once in a while, just thinking there are mysteries that are bigger than us and things that are not quite explained yet, I kind of find that good.
Season 4: Where We Stand
Despite all this gnashing of teeth, Strange New Worlds is actually putting up a stellar showing on the numbers front. Season 4 started dropping on Paramount+ as of 23 July 2026, with episodes landing every Thursday. Fan reviews? Pretty rosy so far—there's a 92% Tomatometer score at Rotten Tomatoes, which is nothing to sneer at.
Season 4 will run for 10 episodes, wrapping up on 24 September 2026.
At time of writing, three episodes have landed: you had 'The Griffin Incident' on 30 July, then 'Human Best Friend' on 6 August. That leaves seven more to go, with the next slotting in on 13 August. And in case you're the sort who needs to plan their viewing three years in advance, the show is already gearing up for a fifth and final run. No air date for that yet, but word is it'll be a bit shorter than usual—just six episodes, and currently filming away as we speak.
