Colin Farrell is playing the long game with Apple TV’s Sugar. Two years after the acclaimed, twisty PI drama debuted, he says the series has a five-season plan — and John Sugar’s far from finished.

So, Colin Farrell is back in the detective business, but don’t go thinking his Apple TV+ series Sugar is your standard noir-with-a-twist affair. Since its debut a couple of years back, the show’s carved out a curious little spot for itself—and now, Farrell’s got his eyes set on a much longer future than you might expect.

Colin Farrell Wants More Sugar (And Not Just For Himself)

Farrell’s now openly saying he’d quite like Sugar to stretch out over five seasons. Not exactly your typical British modesty there, but you’ve got to admire the ambition. Chatting with Collider ahead of Season 2, he made it clear he isn’t thinking cautiously:

'I would love to get four or five seasons out of this.'

He reckons the show’s sci-fi elements will be even deeper this time round, especially thanks to 'a certain very important personal relationship that Sugar has'. Which, you have to admit, is rather cryptic but totally on-brand for this show.

That Alien Reveal—In Case You Missed the First Season

If you haven’t caught up, Sugar looked like it was about a brooding private eye solving LA crimes—until Episode 6 happened. Suddenly, Farrell’s John Sugar is literally not of this world. Turns out, he’s an alien hiding out on Earth. You’d be forgiven for thinking you’d tuned into a completely different show.

Here’s Who’s Who As Season 2 Lands

Plenty of fresh faces for the second series as well:

  • Jin Ha, Raymond Lee, Tony Dalton, Laura Donnelly, Sasha Calle all jumping on board as new cast.
  • Shea Whigham showing up as a guest star.

The creative line-up is pretty weighty too. Mark Protosevich, who cooked up the original concept, continues as creator. Sam Catlin is running the show (and also exec producing), joined in the executive chair by Farrell himself, plus Scott Greenberg, Chip Vucelich, Audrey Chon, and Simon Kinberg.

Critical Applause (And Not Just Polite Applause Either)

Let’s talk stats. Season 1 fared rather well on Rotten Tomatoes: 81% with critics and 80% with the punters. But the really eyebrow-raising bit? The second season’s scored a 100% rating from early critics’ reviews—at least at the time of writing.

Release Details—Mark Your Diary, Or Don’t

Sugar Season 2 hits Apple TV+ on 19 June 2026. You’ve got a bit of a wait, but clearly, that’s all part of the plan.
