Channel 4 is doubling down on its biggest drama breakout since It’s a Sin: Brenda Blethyn’s A Woman of Substance, the Barbara Taylor Bradford adaptation, has been renewed for Season 2, with Emma Harte’s story set to continue after a strong debut.

Well, Channel 4 has decided it liked having Brenda Blethyn on its books, because A Woman of Substance is officially coming back for a second round. If you thought the first series made a splash—you're not wrong. Apparently, it broke every drama streaming record Channel 4's had since It’s a Sin. There's something deeply amusing about a million people streaming an adaptation of a 1979 Barbara Taylor Bradford novel in 2026, but here we are.

Blethyn’s Back (and so’s Young Emma)

So, the main pull: Brenda Blethyn is sticking around as Emma Harte. Frankly, if they’d tried to recast, there would have been a riot (or, at least, a very stern email or two). Jessica Reynolds is also returning as the younger version of Emma—so they’re not dropping that dual-timeline trick, where you see Emma as both sharp-tongued matriarch and upstart shopgirl in post-war Yorkshire.

Why the Quick Renewal?

Here’s the key: the show is based on Taylor Bradford’s bestseller, and the debut season landed on 11 March 2026 to a proper warm reception— critics gave it the thumbs up, landing it at 89% on Rotten Tomatoes (yes, I know, it’s just nine reviews, but still). Season one obviously followed Emma Harte's rise, so now they’re moving further down the line with the next era of her saga.

What’s Coming in Series Two

  • Two timelines to follow:
    • One picks up after the First World War, with Emma elbowing her way into the world of business as a young woman in the 1920s—think power moves, changing British society, and fewer hats with veils.
    • The other fast-forwards to later in Emma’s life—now her empire's at risk, and she’s basically having to snatch it back from Jim Fairley, the latest villain in the boardroom.
    • Who’s Shepherding it All?

If you liked the flavour of season one, nothing’s changed behind the curtain. Katherine Jakeways and Roanne Bardsley are still writing, and Richard Senior remains in the director’s chair. The Forge is still producing, and Banijay Rights is sticking with international distribution—so the Americans will get to see Brenda Blethyn glowering across a mahogany desk just like the rest of us.

      Channel 4 Feeling Smug

A Channel 4 spokesperson said: “We’ve been really thrilled by audience reaction to Emma Harte’s story and can’t wait to bring the next chapter to screens.” If you’re not into vague PR quotes, all you need to know is: viewers watched, critics approved, and now there’s more coming.

Details on casting or when exactly the second series lands are still under wraps for now.
