Brilliant Minds season 3 revealed: the canceled plot fans never got to see

Axed by NBC, Brilliant Minds still has a pulse — showrunner Michael Grassi is spilling what Season 3 would’ve delivered, from the fallout of that Season 2 cliffhanger to the big arcs fans never got to see.

So, NBC may have pulled the plug on Brilliant Minds (and honestly, were you that shocked?), but that hasn't stopped showrunner Michael Grassi from getting chatty about what he had in store if the series had somehow limped into a third season. If you've watched the Season 2 finale—which left things hanging rather dramatically—Grassi's plans are actually worth a listen, if only for how wildly soapy they sound.

What Was Supposed to Happen in Season 3?

The main thrust of Grassi's concept revolved around ramping up the relationship drama between Zachary Quinto's Oliver Wolf and Teddy Sears' Josh Nichols. Apparently, the plan was to show these two trying to juggle fighting medical fires at work while figuring out if moving in together, and even marriage, was actually a good idea. You know, just your everyday workplace full of IV drips and emotional baggage.

'We'd continue to show them in the workplace together and what that looks like and all the fun of them tackling cases together. And at the same time, what does it look like for Josh and Wolf navigating a relationship?'

Grassi was pretty adamant this would go beyond the flirting and hand-holding. There were actual domestic plans—moving boxes, wedding guest lists, probably arguments about flatpack furniture.

The Hudson Riders Twist

Now, here's where it goes a bit off-script. Grassi revealed that Wolf was going to get mixed up, as a secret doctor, with a biker gang called the Hudson Riders. To be clear, there wasn't any plan for him to have a secret affair with someone in a denim cut-off, but there would've been 'very, very fun' tension. The idea was to add to Wolf's complications, not strip off his morals (or, presumably, his lab coat).

The Cliffhanger, Explained (Sort Of)

If you remember the Season 2 finale, Oliver got back together with Josh—only for something strange to knock out a load of hotel guests. Grassi said there was originally a two-parter in the pipeline to deal with whatever that mysterious incident was supposed to be. So, if you were hoping for closure, don't hold your breath.

Other Characters: Unfinished Business

  • Jake Epstein's Alan Caldwell: Grassi had a recurring storyline mapped out for him, which was meant to unfold throughout Season 3.
  • Ashleigh LaThrop's Ericka and her mum: We were apparently going to see a proper attempt at hashing out their parent-child friction. In Grassi's words, he'd wanted Ericka's mother to return and really explore what their relationship could be.

And if you're wondering if Grassi's bitter about the cancellation—doesn't look like it. He said he'd 'jump at that opportunity' to bring Brilliant Minds back. That's probably one for the 'never say never' pile, if you ask me.
