Bad news for anyone banking on Timothée Chalamet returning as Willy Wonka after the 2023 musical: the latest Wonka 2 update points the other way.

If you were quietly hoping for another helping of Wonka with Timothée Chalamet donning the top hat again, it might be time to stash those dreams in the back of the larder. Despite last year’s Paul King-directed origin story giving the franchise a bit of fresh cocoa, it now looks like any plans for a proper sequel have stalled. And yes, the reason is exactly what you’d expect: Chalamet’s diary is full to bursting.

Sequel hits a snag

The first film made quite a splash, to be fair. Chalamet’s take as the younger Willy was well-received, and King was openly keen on coming back for round two, even confirming a sequel was on the boil not long after release. But according to Simon Farnaby (the screenwriter, who chatted to Variety), it’s not happening anytime soon.

Farnaby laid it out pretty plainly: The original did well; everyone was up for more, but scheduling has put the brakes on. In his words,

In a recent interview with Variety, writer Simon Farnaby explained: "He wants to do one, but he's not sure about timing or what he wants to do next," adding that "Wonka 2" is "delayed indefinitely."

So, unless Chalamet learns how to clone himself or invents a 36-hour day, Wonka 2 is more or less on ice for the foreseeable future.

It’s not all doom and gloom

As frustrating as it is, there is one bright spot: Chalamet reportedly hasn’t lost interest in chocolate factory shenanigans altogether. That’s a serious plus for the studio, since his star power is hardly on the wane. His recent flicks have kept critics swooning—between Dune, the biopic A Complete Unknown, and whatever Marty Supreme is meant to be, he’s not short on acclaim or awards attention.

A very crowded Wonka universe

Let’s not forget just how revisited this source material is. Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory has already had more adaptations than hot dinners: You’ve got the classic 1971 musical with Gene Wilder, the Tim Burton version starring Johnny Depp in 2005, and soon Netflix will drop an animated spin called Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory.

All of which is to say, even with delays, we’re hardly suffering from a drought of confectionery-themed content. If you’re desperate to see Chalamet on a big screen again, you won’t have too long to wait—his next outing arrives with Dune: Part 3 (and, for good measure, Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday) on 18 December 2026.

Dune: Part 3 and Avengers: Doomsday are slated for a shared cinema release date in December 2026.
