Backlash prompts HBO to tweak 'Harry Potter' footage months before debut
HBO’s new 'Harry Potter' push is revamping the visuals before Christmas — and the scale of the shake-up might surprise you.
Right, so the Harry Potter franchise is officially being dusted off for telly. Not content with having squeezed every drop from the films, HBO and Warner Bros. are pushing ahead with a brand-new reboot series. We’re not talking spinoffs or sequels—this is a proper do-over, with Season 1 getting the full title Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. Yes, proper British title and everything, none of that Sorcerer’s Stone business the Americans like to insist upon.
As you’d expect, it’s a whole new cast—Dominic McLaughlin steps into the round specs as Harry Potter, Alastair Stout is Ron Weasley, and Arabella Stanton handles Hermione Granger. So, basically, the trio that made Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson household names have been traded for fresh faces who’ll almost certainly inherit all the madness that goes with these parts.
Season one is officially called Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, with HBO sticking to the original UK book title rather than the US "Sorcerer's Stone" version.
The first look and some tweaks
Back in March, HBO dropped the official teaser for this Wizarding World reboot. It showed off their new takes on the golden trio and some of the teaching staff, and let’s be honest, it all looked very 1990s. Loads of jumpers, questionable ties, that sort of thing. They’re keen to tap into the visual vibe from the books—and the earlier films to some extent—but also bring their own spin. The teaser was fairly tight with actual story reveals, trying very hard not to give anything away for viewers who somehow still don’t know what happens at the end of Philosopher’s Stone. Standard practice, I suppose.
Now, HBO’s just lobbed out a new trailer showing off the 2026 slate, and we get another round of footage for this Harry Potter series. This time there’s a very intentional shift in lighting—it’s a load brighter than what we saw in the first teaser. Gone is the gloom, in comes a sort of crisp, almost glowing Hogwarts, as if someone’s turned up the contrast for maximum nostalgia value. It’s a change you can’t miss if you care about this sort of thing, and, let’s be fair, plenty of fans do.

Also in the trailer: there’s footage of McLaughlin’s Potter wandering through the iconic Hogwarts entrance, shots of the trio heading off the Quidditch pitch, plus glimpses of classes (and no doubt, impending chaos). The professors get their own close-ups, which very much drives home this series isn’t shying away from casting recognisable talent for the grown-ups, either.
The latest trailer shows the Philosopher's Stone series with markedly brighter, more polished visuals than the teaser released earlier this year.
Still no date locked in for release, but if the trailers are anything to go by, HBO are determined to present a flashier, glossier rendering of Hogwarts for a new generation—while firmly hanging onto the original British book titles. More details are sure to trickle out as the premiere gets closer.
