Avengers: Doomsday footage just confirmed fans' worst fears: Marvel looks set to rehash Captain America's old story beats instead of breaking new ground.

Look, Marvel’s clearly digging back into its biggest bag of tricks with Avengers: Doomsday—and it’s not exactly subtle about it. If you’ve noticed that the MCU has been flailing around a bit since Endgame (and who hasn’t?), you’re not alone. For every bright spot like Shang-Chi or No Way Home, there’s been an Eternals or Quantumania (ouch). So, what’s Marvel’s next move? Stack the deck so hard with familiar faces that even the most checked-out fan might perk up for one more go-round.

Marvel's Big Nostalgia Play: Who’s Back?

You know things are a little desperate when the studio starts calling up every major old-timer:

  • Chris Evans returns as Captain America—yep, even after Endgame tried to give Steve Rogers an arc with actual closure.
  • Robert Downey Jr is back involved, as are the Russo brothers (so apparently, everyone is pretending those last few years didn’t actually happen).
  • X-Men characters from the old Fox movies are materializing, no multiverse excuse needed—think of that as Marvel shaking every branch to see what kind of nostalgia fruit falls out.
  • And, naturally, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor is back, too. No surprise, considering he’s practically Marvel’s security blanket at this stage.

That Trailer You Haven’t Seen (Yet)

CinemaCon got the goods before the rest of us—Avengers: Doomsday finally got its first big trailer at the event. This wasn’t public, but a bunch of attendees described what went down, and it sounds like exactly the sort of fan-service-heavy stuff Marvel thinks will win everyone back.

Here’s the real headline: Captain America gets to pick up Thor’s hammer again. Yes, Mjölnir gets another workout, which is officially a recurring crowd-pleaser now. The trailer apparently included this little exchange:

Steve Rogers walks up to Thor and calls out, 'Hey pal.' Thor, clearly stunned, says, 'It’s not possible.' Then, Mjölnir literally leaves Thor’s hand and flies right to Steve.

Marvel’s not even pretending this is new, but they know it landed with audiences before—so why not score an easy cheer?

For context, this is now the third time the movies have played with Cap’s worthiness. Remember in Age of Ultron when he nudged the hammer and everyone gasped? Then Endgame went all-in and gave us that pure opening-weekend adrenaline rush when Cap actually fought using Mjölnir. Doomsday is doubling (tripling?) down on what works, for better or worse.

Is Marvel Out of New Ideas?

That’s the elephant in the room. This entire approach is both clever and, frankly, kind of a Hail Mary. There are rumors of Downey playing a new character this time—which is wild—but so far, it’s clear Marvel thinks people only show up for the hits. Captain America’s now apparently a dad, so they’re trying for a different emotional angle, but if you’re hoping for the “new generation” of heroes to get a real spotlight, don’t hold your breath.

Meanwhile, Doctor Doom is showing up, the X-Mansion is in ruins, and the only thing missing is Stan Lee winking at the camera. The strategy seems to be: if you loved the old movies, we’re going to give you those feelings again—or at least try really, really hard.

Marvel could still pull off a movie worth caring about. After all, there’s still time—and, honestly, it’s not like fans are going to stay away if there’s even a hint of that opening-weekend magic. But if Avengers: Doomsday ends up being nothing but a greatest hits mixtape, Marvel might finally have to face the music: at some point, you can only play 'Thunderstruck' so many times before people start to notice the encore is getting stale.
