Anya Taylor-Joy is heading to Middle-earth—The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum just found its newest star
Anya Taylor-Joy joins The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum as a newly minted elf—an original character crafted just for the movie.
If you thought the next trek back to Middle-earth would be a low-key affair, think again. Warner Bros. has just confirmed Anya Taylor-Joy is joining the upcoming Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum – and yes, she’s playing an Elf. No, not Legolas’s long-lost cousin, but a totally new character you’ve never heard of (unless you were an elf in a previous life).
So, Who Exactly is Anya Taylor-Joy Playing?
Taylor-Joy’s role is Seren, a Sindar Elf from the Woodland Realm. Apparently, she’s King Thranduil's right-hand agent and is being described as both ‘trusted’ and ‘lethal’ – which really is the minimum you’d want from your royal spy, isn’t it? Warner’s dropped a photo of her in full cloaked-archer mode on Instagram. Nothing says “serious elf business” like a hooded stare and a bow.
Brand new character, by the way – don’t go diving back into the appendices, you won’t find her anywhere. Frankly, casting Taylor-Joy as anything but an elf would be missing the point, wouldn’t it? (Still, I’d pay money to see her play an Orc just for the chaos of it.)
The Updated Cast List
Here's where things get interesting. Warner Bros. used CinemaCon to reveal the full roster for The Hunt for Gollum, which is shaping up to be a real mix of returning icons and fresh faces:
- Andy Serkis – back as Gollum/Smeagol, and he’s also directing
- Ian McKellen – Gandalf the Grey (yes, still alive and still coming back for more)
- Elijah Wood – Frodo Baggins, not done with hairy feet after all
- Lee Pace – bringing back Thranduil, king of the fabulous eyebrows
- Jamie Dornan – now playing Strider/Aragorn (prepare yourself, Viggo diehards)
- Leo Woodall – Halvard, another Dúnedain who isn’t Aragorn
- Kate Winslet – Marigol, head of some Hobbit-adjacent settlement
The big question mark, of course, is Dornan stepping into the boots of Aragorn. There’s a bit of noise online from those still clutching their extended editions that Viggo Mortensen isn’t returning. Andy Serkis tried to calm everyone by telling the Happy Sad Confused podcast:
'We’re absolutely thrilled that Jamie’s doing it. And, by the way, so is Viggo.'
In other words, Mortensen’s blessing has apparently been granted. Dornan fans, you can exhale.
Release Dates Worth Writing Down
The Hunt for Gollum is barreling towards production, aiming for a 17 December 2027 cinema release. Speaking of big franchises, Taylor-Joy’s not just stopping in Middle-earth. She’s also got a major part in Dune: Part Three, out on 18 December (presumably 2027 unless someone’s run out of sand). She’ll be playing Alia Atreides, Paul’s occasionally terrifying little sister, last seen as a brief cameo if you didn’t blink.
