His role remains under lock and key, but the rumor mill is in overdrive—casting him as power broker, whistleblower, or fall guy. What he did, and when, could redefine the story now unfolding.

James Gunn just keeps adding more familiar faces to his new Superman universe. The latest? Andre Royo, who you probably remember best as 'Bubbles' from The Wire, is joining the cast of Gunn's next DC movie, Man of Tomorrow. Gunn let the world know about Royo's arrival in the most casual (and very Gunn) way possible—a group pic on Threads, with Royo in the lineup and Gunn saying:

'After fifteen years it's great to be working with Andre again!'

For those keeping score: this isn't Royo's first time with Gunn—he had a role back in 2010's Super (the bizarre, pipe-wrench vigilante comedy starring Rainn Wilson). Nathan Fillion also popped up in that one, and Gunn keeps bringing these folks back for his new projects. Clearly, he likes working with people he trusts, which is one of those 'open secrets' about how the guy runs his sets.

Andre Royo: Not Just 'Bubbles'

If you only remember Royo as Bubbles, that's fine, but the guy's done plenty since, including a recurring gig on Empire and an appearance in the indie drama Beautiful Boy. Still, it's safe to say his turn as the endlessly sympathetic informant in The Wire is what he'll forever be known for—and honestly, that's not a bad thing.

So… Who Is Royo Actually Playing?

This is where it gets a little speculative. Gunn hasn't officially said who's on Royo's call sheet, but fans (and let's be real, Gunn himself) think it's probably J'onn J'onzz—the Martian Manhunter. Now, this is not confirmed; it's more sleuthing based on a couple details:

  • Gunn keeps dropping pictures of 'Chocos' (basically DC's Oreo knock-off), which is the Martian Manhunter's favorite snack in the comics. Not exactly subtle.
  • The universe Gunn's building has already introduced other Justice League staples, like Mr. Terrific, Hawkgirl, and two Green Lanterns (Guy Gardner and, new for Man of Tomorrow, John Stewart).
  • Most of the classic Justice League lineup has shown up or is getting introduced, and Martian Manhunter hasn't made his mark in a big way yet.

Add it all up and—no guarantees, but if you hear hoofbeats in a DC project, it's probably a Martian. I guess we'll see.

Who Else Is in Man of Tomorrow?

This movie's cast list is getting pretty stacked. Here are the key players we know so far:

  • David Corenswet as Superman (Clark Kent)
  • Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane
  • Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen
  • Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor (coming back for round two)
  • Edi Gathegi as Mr. Terrific
  • Isabel Merced as Hawkgirl
  • Aaron Pierre as Green Lantern John Stewart (new addition)
  • Adria Arjona as Maxima
  • Lars Eidinger as Brainiac (the main villain this time around)

Royo now joins this crowd, whoever he ends up playing. If it is Martian Manhunter, that would actually be pretty clever casting, since the character is known for his dry, put-upon vibe and his deep well of empathy—a sweet spot Royo can definitely hit.

Martian Manhunter: The Low-Key Cornerstone

If you're not super familiar with Martian Manhunter, he's basically the Justice League's stoic heart—and, honestly, the most underrated alien superhero in the room. DC likes to toss him into a supporting role, but most hardcore fans would argue he deserves his moment.

Quick history: Martian Manhunter's been around in animation for ages (voiced by Carl Lumbly in Justice League and Justice League Unlimited), and appeared in live-action TV on Smallville and Supergirl. He even popped up—briefly—in Zack Snyder's Justice League, played by Harry Lennix. But he's never really been front and center in the movies. If Gunn is using Royo to finally put J'onn J'onzz in the spotlight, I'm all for it.

Looking Ahead

For the planners out there:

  • Man of Tomorrow hits theaters July 9, 2027. (Yeah, it's a long wait.)
  • Before that, you can catch Supergirl starring Milly Alcock as Kara on June 26, 2026.

So, there you have it. The DC universe isn't slowing down, James Gunn is filling out his roster with old friends and cult-favorite actors, and Andre Royo might be getting the superhero turn he deserves—pipe wrench not required. Stay tuned.
