Alice in Wonderland is getting a new TV spin-off about a fan-favourite character
An animated Alice in Wonderland spin-off is in the works, centring on a fan favourite who finally gets the spotlight.
If you thought Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland had already been wrung dry for film and TV, you’d be wrong—now Amazon MGM Studios has decided the Mad Hatter deserves his own animated movie. Not a TV series, mind, but a full-length animated feature with quite a bit of talent behind the scenes.
The Mad Hatter is officially set to star in his own animated film, currently in development at Amazon MGM Studios.
Plot specifics? Absolutely nothing in the way of leaks so far, which is either deeply frustrating or a sign they haven’t actually settled on much yet. All we know is the Hatter is finally getting centre stage, away from Alice and the rest of Wonderland’s usual chaos—and presumably, without any need to explain why he’s so utterly bonkers.
Who’s making it?
This one’s being steered by Scott Mosier, who you might clock as the bloke who co-directed the hit animated version of The Grinch back in 2018 (the one that took in a neat $500 million at the box office). Before that, he produced a stack of Kevin Smith films—Clerks, anyone?—and he’s also got previous writing and voice-acting credits in animated favourites like Sing 2 and The Secret Life of Pets 2. So at least the Wonderland energy should come naturally.
The production’s in the hands of Adam Nagle, via his company Aniventure. They’re the animation lot responsible for filling the slates at Amazon, Netflix, Paramount, and Sony with a good few originals, so there’s a reliable background of family fare here.
Wonderland’s on-screen history: A quick refresher
For anyone counting, the story of Alice and her strange tea-party friends has been through more adaptations than a cat has lives. The 1951 Disney animated film is still probably the most recognisable, more than seventy years later. But then Cameron’s not the only director with rabbit hole credentials—Tim Burton gave it a high-camp, CGI-packed reboot in 2010, with Mia Wasikowska as Alice and Johnny Depp (of course) as the Mad Hatter, followed by a 2016 sequel, Alice Through the Looking Glass.
Telly hasn’t exactly been shy either: think of the all-star TV miniseries back in 1985, Hallmark’s late-90s smorgasbord with Tina Majorino, Syfy’s rather odd 2009 reimagining, and an entire Wonderland spin-off for ABC’s Once Upon a Time—which ran for a season in 2013–2014. Everyone wants a slice of Carroll’s surreal world.
So here we go again—just swap Alice herself for the man in the oversized hat and see what spills out of the teapot. There’s no word yet on a release date or even a story outline, though, so set your expectations accordingly.
