Alan Ritchson questions the need for a Harry Potter reboot — fans are with him
Reacher star Alan Ritchson had his say on HBO’s Harry Potter reboot, flagging a concern many fans will recognise.
Here’s a fun bit for fellow fantasy nerds: Alan Ritchson – you know, hulking presence from Reacher and Motor City – is a massive Harry Potter devotee. But while he’ll happily admit his love for the films, he’s not exactly jumping on the hype broomstick for the new HBO series. He’s got some thoughts – and honestly, you’ve probably heard these mutterings in fan circles already.
Ritchson explained at San Diego Comic-Con, 'For me, it’s Harry Potter. I’m a huge Harry Potter fan. Just the dun, du-dun, dun… Just the sound of that movie inspires this feeling of magic. I believe that we live in a world of magic, and a lot of us have forgotten that, or don’t believe it anymore. I think our job and my mission in film and TV is to continue to bring that kind of thing to life on screen so that we remember that’s a part of us.'
Too Soon for a Reboot?
Let’s break it down: even though Ritchson gets plenty of creative fuel from the original Potter films (he basically says the theme tune is enough to put him in a 'magic exists' mood), his take on HBO’s upcoming adaptation is a lot cooler. He made it clear he thinks the network’s just a bit too quick off the mark re-imagining Rowling’s saga, especially while the movies are still fresh in everyone’s minds. In his own words, he’ll check the new series out, but there’s a definite note of 'are we really doing this again already?'
On whether he’ll be tuning in, Ritchson added, 'Yeah. I’m a big fan of the films, but yeah, I will watch. But I don’t know. I also think it’s hard for me… It’s too soon. For some things, it’s too soon. Maybe Goonies. Maybe it’s time for another stab at Goonies… But I don’t know. What’s the time limit?'
The original eight Harry Potter films (yes, all eight, not counting the spinoffs) ran from 2001 straight through 2011, with Daniel Radcliffe basically growing up on screen. Then Warner Bros. milked the universe further with the Fantastic Beasts prequels, starring Eddie Redmayne, which hit cinemas from 2016 up until 2022. So, not even five years out from the most recent bit of franchise content, HBO’s firing up a new adaptation for the streaming era.
The Harry Potter TV series is set to launch on HBO and HBO Max on 25 December 2026.
Ritchson is hardly the only one wondering if we really need another full retelling of Harry’s story so soon. But with a major release date now set, the magic is rolling again, for better or worse.
