Tony DiNozzo is back on the case. CBS has set Michael Weatherly for a season-long NCIS arc after canceling his spinoff, teeing up the franchise’s biggest homecoming in years.

If you thought you’d seen the last of Tony DiNozzo dusting for prints in a fitted suit, think again. After what’s frankly been a chaotic few years for NCIS and its sprawling universe of spin-offs, Michael Weatherly is officially coming back to the original series. Yes, the man who played DiNozzo for 13 years – arguably the show’s cheekiest hero – is about to swagger his way back into the squad room. CBS confirmed this midweek, and to be blunt, you can tell they’re playing their nostalgia card hard.

Not So Gently Does It: Why Weatherly Is Back Now

If you’re wondering why DiNozzo’s brushing off his badge in 2026, it’s less about unfinished business and more about franchise manoeuvring. CBS seems to be steering NCIS back to its comfort zone, just as Mark Harmon signs up for another stretch (admittedly, in the prequel, NCIS: Origins). I can’t be the only one who hears alarm bells ringing: whenever TV execs start dragging out the old stars, you know they’re keen to reel back in lapsed fans.

The Spinoff That Wasn’t: Tony & Ziva Gets the Boot

And how did we get here? Honestly, it’s been a whirlwind. Weatherly only just re-teamed with fellow NCIS legend Cote de Pablo last year for NCIS: Tony & Ziva on Paramount+. The pair spent the entire series dodging danger, raising a daughter, and generally being fugitives with great hair. Fans got properly invested – so it was a proper gut-punch when Paramount+ abruptly cancelled it in December 2025, out of nowhere.

Weatherly and de Pablo, clearly aware of the torch-carrying among their supporters, dropped a statement after the axe fell:

'We feel incredibly lucky to have had the chance to play these characters once again and to tell the next chapter of Tony and Ziva's story. Our deepest thanks go to our extraordinary cast, crew, writers, directors, and producers, and to our partners at CBS Studios and Paramount+ who helped make this dream a reality.'

Back to the Mothership – But Where’s Ziva?

Here’s where things get fiddly. Tony & Ziva left the couple and their daughter still on the run, embroiled in all sorts of international cloak-and-dagger stuff. But now CBS is only talking about Weatherly’s return for a season-long story arc in the flagship NCIS – with not a mention of de Pablo coming along for the ride. In other words: either Tony’s popping back solo to help the current squad, or the writers are about to face an absolute headache figuring out how to explain Ziva’s absence without causing timeline chaos. Good luck to them.

The Old and The New: Who’s Actually Still There?

  • Sean Murray as McGee (your eternal tech whizz)
  • Wilmer Valderrama as Torres (ex-FBI muscle, still not mellowed)
  • Brian Dietzen as Dr. Palmer (the show’s heart since Ducky retired)
  • Diona Reasonover as Kasie (resident forensics genius)
  • Katrina Law as Knight (so far not killed by the revolving door)
  • Gary Cole as Parker (boss man since Gibbs departed)
  • And now: Michael Weatherly, DiNozzo himself – back for Season 24’s main event

The next batch drops this autumn. No sign yet of any official Ziva cameo – or, for that matter, any answers as to what possessed Paramount+ to pull the plug just as fans got what they wanted for once.
