Forget the blockbusters — a scrappy indie horror thriller is the one keeping audiences up at night, packing late shows, flooding feeds, and turning jump scares into viral currency.

Well, here’s a story that should make Hollywood’s money men sweat: 2026’s biggest box office shock isn’t a superhero sequel, a musty franchise, or a nostalgic reboot. This time it’s Obsession – an indie horror flick made on the sort of budget that wouldn’t cover most blockbuster catering bills, now noisily elbowing its way into box office history.

'Obsession': The Little Horror That Could

Obsession crept onto screens back in May, weighed down by neither hype nor major studio backing. The entire thing cost just $750,000 to make – which, by Hollywood standards, is practically loose change down the back of the sofa. But here’s the kicker: per Box Office Mojo, Obsession has officially smashed through the $297 million mark. Quick bit of maths – that’s almost 400 times its original budget. And it isn’t done yet; quite a few major international markets haven’t even had their theatrical run. That total’s only going up from here.

Joining the Indie Horror Big Leagues

What’s remarkable is how Obsession now stands shoulder-to-shoulder with some real legends of indie horror. It’s rubbing shoulders with the likes of Paranormal Activity and The Blair Witch Project – both famous for making obscene amounts of money out of almost nothing. It’s a proper reminder that when it comes to making a killing at the box office, horror’s always got the best odds if you do it right. Turns out you don’t need an army of CGI wizards and twelve A-listers – just a good idea, a proper scare, and apparently not much else.

2026: Horror’s Ruthless Golden Year

The only contender close to Obsession in the surprise-success stakes this year is Backrooms – that’s the Hollywoodised version of an internet-fuelled nightmare conjured up by Kane Parsons, back when he was still a teenager. Backrooms has raked in over $262 million on a $10 million budget, so not as astronomically profitable as Obsession, but still a major win.

There’s a weird trend here: both breakout horror hits were orchestrated by online content creators, both given a shot to take their stuff to the big screen. Not only have they gotten bums on seats, they’ve also made studios look foolish for their obsession (pun intended) with tired old franchises.

The Sequel Machine Kicks Off (Inevitable, Isn’t It?)

Of course, as soon as a surprise hit hits, every exec starts asking about sequels. Director Curry Barker’s been fending off those questions left and right. Naturally, he’s not completely immune to the idea himself. In his own words:

'I obviously have a couple more things that I’m excited about next, but I do see Obsession 2. Or even what really is exciting to me is maybe an anthology, like a one-hour episode. Each episode is a different wish that goes completely off the rails.'

He made it clear, though, that he’s in no rush to crack on with a direct follow-up. Turns out his next film is Anything But Ghosts, which apparently takes place in the same universe, though it’s not a straight sequel. So there’s connective tissue, but not the usual franchise assembly line.
