The 300 and Watchmen director is suiting up to reimagine a dystopian 80s action classic, officially signing on for a gritty new take.

Well, Zack Snyder’s not finished rummaging through the cult classics bin, clearly. After starting his film career by remaking Romero’s 'Dawn of the Dead' back in 2004—one of those rare zombie reboots people don’t moan about—Snyder went on to rack up a string of comic book films, mostly dark, mostly divisive, mostly in that now-defunct DC Extended Universe. More recently, he's spent his time in Netflix land with 'Rebel Moon', which, let’s be honest, isn’t exactly setting the critical world alight.

Now, here’s the latest: According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, Snyder’s got his eye on another 80s cult classic, but this time it's not zombies—it’s 'Escape from New York'. If you know your iconic sci-fi action, you'll know this is one of John Carpenter’s finest. It's the film that gave us Snake Plissken: scruffy, eye-patched, attitude by the bucket-load, and played by Kurt Russell at the height of being effortlessly cool.

Snyder’s New Mission: Snake, Rebooted

The basic setup of Carpenter’s original, in case you need a refresher: Released in 1981, half the budget of a typical blockbuster, but bags of style. New York has been turned into a full-on prison, the President of the United States has crash-landed there, and Snake Plissken gets dumped in to rescue him, facing gangs, darkness, and a city that looks ten times scarier than Times Square after midnight.

It's the sort of gritty, anarchic vision that filmmakers love to homage but rarely pull off. Carpenter and Russell worked together plenty of times, but 'Escape from New York' is arguably their best collaboration—Snake Plissken basically became a mascot for anti-heroes everywhere.

What’s Actually Happening With the Remake?

Right, so what’s Snyder doing with it? Apparently, he’s not just directing: he’s writing this new version as well. The aim is to 'reimagine' it, so not a shot-for-shot remake, but a proper modern spin. Whether that means slicker action, grimmer politics, or just more slow-motion gunfights remains to be seen.

Here's the interesting bit for film industry watchers: Snyder’s Escape From New York isn’t locked in at a streamer or a cinema chain yet. The plan is to give it a big theatrical release, but right now the project is being offered around both cinema distributors and streaming platforms. Clearly, everyone wants a piece of 80s nostalgia, but studios are still weighing up whether there's room for another reboot in a crowded market.

THR reports: Snyder has signed on to write and direct a reimagining of Escape From New York. The package is being shopped to both streamers and theatrical distributors, with the intention of a theatrical release.

The Original: A Quick Cast Recap

  • Kurt Russell as Snake Plissken (the main draw, obviously)
  • Donald Pleasence playing the U.S. President in full panic mode
  • Isaac Hayes as the Duke of New York (yes, that Isaac Hayes)
  • Lee Van Cleef as Bob Hauk, military guy with the world’s least enjoyable job
  • Ernest Borgnine, Adrienne Barbeau, Harry Dean Stanton—proper character actor heaven

No word whatsoever, yet, about casting for the new version or how close Snyder will stick to Carpenter’s brilliant blueprint. Also no sign at this stage whether John Carpenter himself is involved, consulting, or just quietly dreading what Hollywood’s about to do with his baby.

This saga’s definitely not over—the project’s still being shopped around, and these things tend to take plenty of twists before the cameras even start rolling.
