Season two of this animated series nearly matched the first — but is a third outing on the cards?

It seems we’re in the middle of a proper cyberpunk boom on telly at the moment. Between new series set in the worlds of Blade Runner, Neuromancer, and Cyberpunk 2077, there’s no shortage of neon-lit dystopias to keep you entertained—or, depending on your mood, mildly horrified about the future. Let’s run through what’s out there and get properly stuck in with Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, which has just finished its second run on Netflix.

Streaming Now and Coming Soon

If you want to spend the winter in a world of flying cars and corporate overlords, there’s plenty on the slate for you. Blade Runner 2099 lands on Prime Video this 25 November. Apple’s got its own offering, with a live-action adaptation of Neuromancer landing in January 2027. Over on Netflix, fans of Japanese animation are getting stuck into the latest season of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, which dropped on 20 October.

Both seasons of Edgerunners follow new storylines and characters, so there are no lingering cliffhangers between instalments.

Back to Night City

In case you missed it, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is based on CD Projekt Red’s video game Cyberpunk 2077. Set in the gloriously miserable sprawl of Night City, everyone’s either working for some hideous mega-corp, desperately escaping poverty, or booking their next body modification. First released in 2022, the show’s first season came out swinging—100% ‘Fresh’ on Rotten Tomatoes, and a deserved crowd-pleaser if you like your sci-fi stylish, emotional, and gratuitously violent. The animation studio behind all this, Trigger, got heaps of credit for making the whole thing look like an acid trip you can’t quite wake up from.

This second season, while still a hit, hasn’t quite set critics ablaze in the same way—sitting at a solid 80% Rotten Tomatoes rating compared to the spotless debut. The action’s just as sharp, but the excitement has cooled ever so slightly. What’s clever, though, is that the show doesn’t hang about with continuations or forced sequels. Season one was all about David Martinez, a student-turned-edgerunner pulled into a gang of criminals with enough lasers in their arms to light up most of London. The current series pivots to a totally different group, with the whole thing loosely anchored by Roman Carax, a 12-year-old cinephile with an old camera and a habit of popping up where the real trouble is.

Will There Be More?

The big question: are we getting more Edgerunners? There’s been chatter but nothing confirmed. Bartosz Sztybor, a writer and showrunner from CD Projekt Red, gave some insight in an interview with Comic Book.

Here's what Sztybor had to say about a possible third run, when asked if Night City’s story is done:

There’s a lot of stories to tell in Night City and beyond, so you never know. But not only my, but I think the whole studio’s approach [CD Projekt RED’s], is that there always needs to be a perfect story and a perfect director, artist, or a studio that will be able to pull off this story. So if the stars align and will be able to create something high quality again, then yes. But if there’s no perfect story or no perfect director with his unique or her unique voice, then maybe it will be just two Edgerunners.

Long story short, it’s not nailed on we’ll be returning any time soon—there’s no immediate plan, and it sounds like it’ll only happen if the right creative team turns up with an idea they’re actually excited about. Bit of a shame, maybe, but better than forcing out something half-baked. At least there’s no cliffhanger to lose sleep over: both seasons are self-contained, so you won’t be muttering at your TV waiting for the next chunk of plot.

What Else Is Coming?

  • Paramount is in the middle of making a live-action Cyberpunk 2077 film (separate from Edgerunners; it’s telling a whole new story instead of adapting the game directly).
  • Fans are still sifting through teasers and Q&As to figure out what future anime, films, or game content might be on the way. As with everything in this genre, don’t expect answers until right before release.

So, for cyberpunk completists, there’s no shortage of new additions to the universe on the horizon, even if Edgerunners itself steps off the grid for a while.
