Only Charlie Cox could call Born Again’s cancellation a 'gift' — and mean it
Charlie Cox explains why Daredevil: Born Again wrapping on Disney+ isn’t like Netflix’s axe — and why he’s calling that outcome a gift.
Right, so a bit of closure news for the Daredevil crowd. Charlie Cox has been chatting about Daredevil: Born Again at MCM Comic Con, and he seems to be taking the soon-to-end Disney+ run much better than the way Netflix abruptly pulled the plug years back. Not often you get an actor calling a cancellation a 'gift', but here we are.
We've had the opportunity to end on our terms. I would take that any time over what happened last time with Netflix, where we didn't get that opportunity.
Cox was pretty open about the difference this time round versus the aggro of 2018, when Netflix axed the original Daredevil out of nowhere after three seasons. If you remember, Netflix hardly gave anybody any warning. Done, boom, thank you and goodnight. No proper ending, and fans left hanging.
The Netflix Years (and the Chop)
The original Daredevil series wrapped up its third and—thanks to Netflix—unintentionally final season in November 2018, then met the same fate as every Marvel show on that platform. Netflix put out a polite-enough statement at the time, banging on about how proud they were, how painful it was to end things for the fans, and how nice everyone was on the cast and crew. They even left the door open for Matt Murdock to pop up elsewhere in Marvel's ever-expanding multiverse—clearly not a total death knell for the character, just that particular version of the show.
Born Again Run and the End in Sight
Fast-forward more than six years and Disney+ resurrected the character in March 2025 with Daredevil: Born Again. So yes, Cox is back as Matt Murdock, suiting up again to carry on from where Netflix left things hanging. The show's managed to last another three seasons, and Cox is clearly grateful for the chance to properly finish the story on his own terms, with a degree of dignity and less upheaval.
Daredevil: Born Again will launch its third and final run in March 2027, with eight episodes lined up to wrap things up.
From what’s trickling out, Season 3 picks up with Murdock getting out of prison, six months after the events of last season. That angle’s a bit of a blank slate for the writers, so it’ll be interesting to see how they close the book without rushing the landing. It’s rare for a superhero series to get the time and runway to do that—most just disappear overnight.
