VisionQuest had a shocking showrunner exit — and Paul Bettany was left with questions
Paul Bettany has revealed a major departure from upcoming MCU series VisionQuest left him asking questions — and the identity of who’s gone will raise a few more.
It's been a bit of musical chairs over at Marvel TV, though that's hardly a novelty these days. The upcoming series VisionQuest—the third in that loose trilogy of shows that started with WandaVision and carried on with Agatha All Along—has lost its original showrunner. And I do mean proper lost, not a half-hearted 'consulting producer' situation. Jac Schaeffer, the creative force behind both previous series, was meant to be steering this one as well, but by mid-2024 she was out, replaced by Terry Matalas.

Bettany's Side of the Shake-Up
Paul Bettany—Vision himself—hasn't exactly kept a poker face about all this. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, he admitted the transition wasn't the smoothest: he found out Schaeffer was off the project for what he described as 'personal reasons', and apparently, the news landed like a bucket of cold water.
Here's how Paul Bettany put it during his EW chat, summing up that feeling of having the rug yanked out:
I felt like the rug had been pulled from under my feet. I love her very much, and we made a lovely thing together. I had been waiting and looking forward to having my turn with Jac. And then 24 hours later, I was at a lunch with Terry, because that's the speed at which Marvel moves.
Now, if you're picturing some behind-the-scenes bust-up, it doesn't sound like that at all. Schaeffer actually addressed her decision last October in an interview, explaining the whole issue came down to a scheduling jam. Apparently, Agatha All Along and VisionQuest overlapped so much that there was just no way she could handle both. So, with what she described as a 'heavy heart', she stepped aside—though she's stuck around as an executive producer, waving pom-poms for the cast, especially Bettany.
Terry Matalas Steps Up
Once Terry Matalas was properly installed, he wasted no time sitting down with Bettany to hash out where the Vision character ought to go next. What they came up with, apparently, can be best described as 'intergenerational digital trauma'—which, as far as Marvel catchphrases go, sounds pretty on brand. If you're expecting a straightforward superhero romp, perhaps recalibrate your expectations slightly.
Elsewhere in the cast, apart from Bettany, there's James Spader, Ruaridh Mollica, and Todd Stashwick on board. Quite a line-up, though no one is likely stealing Vision's thunder this time round.
The show is officially set to drop on Disney+ from 14 October 2026. So yes, the wait goes on.
