As hype builds for Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, Vincent D’Onofrio answers the burning question, revealing why Jon Bernthal’s Punisher won’t return and what the decision says about the creative direction of the new season.

So if you were hoping to see Jon Bernthal’s Punisher and his patented brooding rage stomp back into Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, I’ve got news—he’s sitting this round out. And the reason? It’s not some drama behind the scenes, Marvel's tired multiverse shenanigans, or even a creative choice. It’s plain old scheduling, but with a twist that only Marvel could pull off.

Why No Punisher in Daredevil Season 2?

The always-direct Vincent D'Onofrio (Kingpin himself) set things straight on social media after a fan pressed him about Bernthal’s absence from the upcoming season. Here’s what he said, and honestly, it sounds exactly like him:

If John wasn't busy making his own hour long Punisher film and hangin with that insect we would have wanted him to join us in Season 2 for sure. Yet he had a wonderful opportunity to do the other projects and i for one can't wait to see him in those.

Translation: Bernthal wasn't avoiding Daredevil, he was just double (triple?) booked—filming both a Punisher Disney+ special and also mixing it up with the webhead in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Charlie Cox (Matt Murdock himself) has echoed this: Bernthal’s Marvel plate is overflowing, so don’t expect to see Frank Castle adding to Fisk’s headaches in this particular reunion.

Where Did We Last Leave the Punisher?

If you watched the first season of Daredevil: Born Again (which, honestly, you probably did if you’re reading this), Bernthal showed up as Frank Castle for two solid episodes—one being the season finale. He kicked some serious ass fighting against Fisk’s Anti-Vigilante Task Force and then managed to vanish in a post-credits sequence. Classic Marvel move: dangle the threat, cut to black, hold for applause.

But here’s where it gets quirky. Instead of picking up his story in Season 2, Marvel is spinning him off into that previously mentioned standalone Punisher Disney+ special, which is apparently already wrapped and set for release late 2026. And if that wasn’t enough, he’s also swinging by Sony’s (yes, Sony’s) Spider-Man: Brand New Day, out July 31, 2026—with promotional art making it clear Frank Castle survives whatever comes his way in Hell’s Kitchen.

So Are These Stories Connected?

Marvel’s doing their ‘characters all exist in New York but don’t actually talk to each other much’ thing again. Both projects are in the same city, same timeline, but the stories stay mostly in their own lanes. Don’t expect a big crossover event between Daredevil and Spider-Man (at least, not this year).

What’s Next for Daredevil and Everyone Else?

  • Daredevil: Born Again Season 2: No Punisher, but production is full steam ahead (and Marvel already greenlit a Season 3, just to make your binge-watching ears perk up).
  • Punisher Disney+ Special: Shot and on track for a late-2026 debut. This is where to see Bernthal go full ballistic.
  • Spider-Man: Brand New Day: Coming July 31, 2026, with Bernthal’s Punisher in the picture but plot details mostly under wraps.

One last thing: Now that Bernthal’s wrapped up his current Marvel obligations, his schedule looks a bit more open for the future. So if Marvel wants to drop the Punisher back into Season 3 (or whatever comes next), there’s nothing officially stopping them—at least for now.

Basically, Marvel is spreading Punisher love all over the place, just not in this season of Daredevil. File that under ‘good news, bad news’ and get ready for yet another watchlist expansion in 2026.
