Vince Vaughn Teases The Bookie & the Bruiser, A Mafia Showdown In The Making
Brawl in Cell Block 99 star Vince Vaughn is reuniting with director S. Craig Zahler for another bruising collaboration.
Vince Vaughn has been making some interesting career moves lately, and this latest bit of news will definitely catch the eye of anyone into dark, gnarly crime thrillers. After his recent sci-fi outing with Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice at SXSW—which, by the way, went over pretty well—Vaughn is heading back into much grimier territory. He’s teaming up once again with director S. Craig Zahler, which pretty much guarantees two things: unapologetic violence and absolutely zero studio interference.
So, What Are Vaughn and Zahler Cooking Up?
Zahler and Vaughn have already made two hard-hitting films together—2017’s Brawl in Cell Block 99 and 2018's Dragged Across Concrete—both divisive, both drenched in violence and moral ambiguity. This reunion? It’s for a period mafia flick called The Bookie & The Bruiser, and honestly, the premise sounds like classic Zahler territory.
Vaughn spilled the beans in an interview, saying:
'With Zahler, we're going to go do The Bookie & the Bruiser, which is a period mafia movie. As much as I love all of his movies, I'm really excited. This is a very fun, very cool movie to be a part of.'
To quickly catch you up: Zahler hasn’t actually released a movie in about eight years, his last being Dragged Across Concrete (yes, that one with Mel Gibson and a plot that had folks arguing at the time). It’s safe to assume the controversy probably slowed down his next gig.
Here’s What We Know (So Far)
- Production Timeline: Sources are saying they’re aiming to start filming in 2026. So, realistically, you won’t see this one until 2027 at the earliest, assuming Hollywood doesn’t invent a new headache between now and then.
- Cast Shakeups: Originally, Adrien Brody was lined up to co-star, but he’s out. Theo James, most recently seen in The Monkey, is stepping in instead.
- The Story: Vaughn is playing the 'bruiser'—an Italian-American World War II vet trying to figure out his place after the war. He teams up with a Jewish bookie (played by Rossi) to start their own criminal racket. Naturally, nothing goes smoothly, and the two find themselves wedged in the middle of a turf war between the Mafia and the Irish mob. It's got all the Zahler hallmarks: violent, morally slippery, and, frankly, not for the faint of heart.
Why This Reunion Matters
Vaughn and Zahler make a pretty formidable pair when it comes to pitch-black crime sagas. If you’re new to Zahler’s work, he’s built up a reputation for films that wallow in the mud: grindhouse style violence, tightly coiled plots, bleak worldviews, and not much interest in what’s “commercial” or “safe.” If his last two movies with Vaughn are any indication, The Bookie & The Bruiser will double down on that style.
Honestly, it’ll be fascinating to see if Zahler’s approach has changed after such a long break (eight years is practically an eternity between films these days). Given the story setup—a WW2 vet, criminal alliances, a war between mafias—I wouldn’t expect anything toned-down or cozy.
No release date yet, but with filming hopefully starting in 2026, cross your fingers for something by 2027. Until then, buckle up, because if this team’s track record is any indication, subtlety will not be on the menu.
