Vengeance Rockets to Amazon's #1 Global Spot: A John Wick Meets Rambo Thrill Ride
An under-the-radar action flick just exploded on streaming — and it could rewrite the genre’s rules.
Amazon just dropped a new action movie, and barely a month later, it’s basically everywhere. Seriously—‘Vengeance’ went from total unknown to topping streaming charts in the US and around the world. What’s the secret sauce? Think Rambo vibes mashed up with John Wick’s relentless payback, then toss in a few twists and an unexpectedly massive budget.
From Zero to Global Smash
Catching pretty much everyone by surprise, ‘Vengeance’—or ‘Venganza’ if you’re in Latin America—has become the action thriller nobody saw coming. Amazon put some serious money behind it, making it their priciest Mexican production to date (yes, ever), and gave it a tiny theatrical run before shoving it straight onto Prime Video in April.
Rodrigo Valdés directs, but the real eyebrow-raiser here is comedian Omar Chaparro showing up as the new face of vengeful brutality. The plot? It’s a time-tested recipe that never seems to get old: decorated special forces guy comes home, finds his wife murdered, and—surprise—he’s out for blood. There’s a little twist: an unexpected inheritance gives him all the funds he needs to gear up a la John Wick. Nobody’s reinventing the wheel here, but it works.
How Big Is This, Really?
- It flew to #1 in places like Nigeria, Indonesia, Italy, and the Philippines. Not just a Spanish-language sensation—this thing went truly international.
- Still sitting comfortably in the top 10 on Prime in the US.
- Billed as Prime Video’s most ambitious Latin American action film, and that cash clearly shows on screen.
- It’s even been called ‘the most expensive Mexican movie ever made under the Amazon MGM Studios banner.’
Pablo Cruz, the producer, worked on this for six years. He admits that even he didn’t see this hit coming:
'Sometime during the editing, Amazon saw that this film had legs outside Mexico and sent it to the international team. The film rapidly became No. 1 in Spanish-speaking countries, but then started going first in countries we would never expect. Action cinema should be free to fly and I’m sure localizing language wise the film makes it easier for a kid in Indonesia or in Egypt, to watch it and recommend it and so the films become a world wide phenomena.'
Action With A Little Mexican Twist
Early viewer reactions are trickling in. The consensus? Loads of fun, slick, classic revenge, and some truly satisfying shootouts. If you want a cerebral masterpiece, this isn’t it—but if you’re down for a stylish revenge saga, you’ll get your fix. Notably, critics (and audiences) have called it ‘pure entertainment’ and ‘a rollicking revenge thriller with some great action sequences and characters.’
For producer Cruz, this movie is more than just a surprise hit; he sees it as proof that Mexican cinema can—and should—branch way beyond rom-coms and melodramas. He’s betting that ‘Vengeance,’ alongside another recent action hit, ‘Counterstrike’ (‘Contraataque’), could actually change global perceptions about action films from Latin America.
'Latam cinema can become a real option for world audiences, like in the days of the Mexican Cine de Oro. We are a culture that is beyond universal in music. Film is next.'
Bottom line: ‘Vengeance’ looks to be one of those cases where a big gamble paid off, with Amazon banking on a Mexican action flick to travel far beyond its home turf—and for once, the streaming hype feels genuinely earned.
