Think Reacher Is Tough? 10 Action Thrillers That Hit Harder
Craving nonstop adrenaline? These 10 high-octane action thrillers outgun Reacher and won’t give you a second to breathe.
So, you’re hooked on Reacher. Can’t blame you — nothing beats watching Alan Ritchson pulverize baddies after a long day of pretending to be civilized. Brutal fights, breakneck pacing, an unreasonably large protagonist (seriously, where do they find these people?), and just enough story to keep you happily munching popcorn between smackdowns. But, here’s the thing: Reacher isn’t the only game in town. In fact, there’s a whole pile of adrenaline-heavy action shows out there—some are arguably even better, or at least different enough to scratch that same itch.
Whether you want military revenge fantasy, Korean loan shark mayhem, genetically engineered teenagers, or spies in the gutter—there’s plenty to binge. Let’s look at ten action-thrillers with the same punchiness as Reacher... and maybe a bit more variety.
10 Action Thrillers Built for Reacher Fans (or Anyone Who Likes Punching)
- The Terminal List (Prime Video, 1 Season, 2022–)
Chris Pratt dropped the Star-Lord mask, picked up some tactical gear, and got angrier than we’ve seen since Parks and Rec season 2. Here, Pratt plays Lt. Commander James Reece whose Navy SEAL squad gets ambushed on a mission—and things get murky fast. He comes home, starts piecing together his own shattered memory, and realizes someone powerful wants him and his loved ones gone for good. There’s lots of military jargon, lots of gunfire, and approximately zero comedic quips. Constance Wu, Taylor Kitsch (getting his own spin-off, apparently!), Riley Keough, Arlo Mertz, and Jeanne Tripplehorn fill out a pretty loaded cast. FYI: Season 2 should drop this year. - Bloodhounds (Netflix, 2 Seasons, 2023–)
If you haven’t dipped into recent Korean action TV, start here. The hook: a boxer (Kim Gun-woo) gets tangled with a loan shark cartel called Smile Capital after his mom gets targeted. He teams up with a former marine-turned-boxer (Hong Woo-jin) and a moneylender with a past (Choi Tae-ho) to take the fight back to the bad guys. Expect nasty violence, solid chemistry, and some honestly gorgeous fight scene cinematography. Woo Do-hwan and Lee Sang-yi lead, with a supporting cast including Tae Won-seok, Choi Siwon, Yun Yoo-sun, and Choi Young-joon. No season 3 news yet. - Hanna (Prime Video, 3 Seasons, 2019–2021)
Here’s the pitch: what if the super-soldier program was about teenage girls? Adapted from the 2011 movie, Hanna takes a genetically tweaked kid and her very stressed-out dad into the Polish woods. The CIA tried to kill them both years ago. Now, the girl everyone wants dead is growing up fast—and she’s one tough kid. There are assassins, secret agencies, and plenty of running through the trees, but it actually works as a coming-of-age story…and a paranoia-drenched thriller. Esme Creed-Miles, Mireille Enos, Dermot Mulroney, Yasmin Monet Prince, and Joel Kinnaman star. - Daredevil (Netflix, 3 Seasons, 2015–2018)
We’ve seen a lot of Marvel adaptations but Charlie Cox’s take as Matt Murdock—blind lawyer by day, human battering ram by night—still holds up. The hand-to-hand fight scenes are legendary (that hallway scene? Still rules), and Vincent D'Onofrio’s Kingpin remains one of TV’s great villains. It’s heavier, meaner, and more complex than most caped crusader fare. Deborah Ann Woll and Elden Henson add to a tight core cast. The later Disney+ continuation? We’ll see, but nothing replaces the Netflix seasons for street-level action done right. - Cross (Prime Video, 2 Seasons, 2024–)
Imagine a profiler who quotes Dostoevsky and then chases killers through D.C. streets. That’s Cross. Adapted from the James Patterson novels, Aldis Hodge plays detective/forensic shrink Alex Cross, who’s constantly trying to get ahead of murderers while wrestling with his own demons and the messy, not-exactly-lawful side of the justice system. The show goes deeper into social issues than most action heavyweights (expect some actual commentary on race and policing), but don’t worry—there’s still plenty of running, punching, and shooting. Hodge is joined by Isaiah Mustafa, Alona Tal, Juanita Jennings, Samantha Walkes, Caleb Elijah, Melody Hurd, and Johnny Ray Gill. A third season’s already cooking. - Alice in Borderland (Netflix, 3 Seasons, 2020–2025)
Got a taste for survival games and Tokyo gone wild? This show’s a mind-bender, adapting Haro Aso’s manga and dropping a slacker named Arisu into a deserted, deadly version of Tokyo where the only way to stay alive is winning—often insane—challenges. There’s sci-fi weirdness, unnerving violence, and a wild supporting cast, all shot with ridiculous style. Kento Yamazaki, Tao Tsuchiya, Nijiro Murakami, Aya Asahina, Yutaro Watanabe, and Keita Machida all make an impact. - Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan (Prime Video, 4 Seasons, 2018–2023)
No joke: John Krasinski (aka Jim from The Office) put on about fifty pounds of muscle and went full espionage as Jack Ryan. The basic premise: CIA desk guy stumbles onto a massive threat, gets yanked into actual field work, and the international shenanigans begin. It’s more political than most on this list, but if you like your gunfights with a side of global conspiracy, it checks all the boxes. Roster includes Wendell Pierce, Michael Kelly, Abbie Cornish, and Betty Gabriel. - Black Doves (Netflix, 1 Season, 2024–)
Keira Knightley as a London spy married to the Secretary of State for Defence? Yeah, I’ll watch that. Black Doves is from Joe Barton, who did The Lazarus Project (why haven’t more people seen that show?). Here, Knightley’s character, Helen, tries to keep her cover from getting blown after her lover is killed by the city’s underworld. Enter Sam (Ben Whishaw) as an old ally offering backup. It’s pulpy, gory, and darkly funny — think Bodyguard meets The Night Manager, but with more neon. Sarah Lancashire, Andrew Buchan, Andrew Koji, Omari Douglas, Sam Troughton, Ella Lily Hyland, and Isabella Wei are also in the mix. Season 2 is confirmed. - 24 (FOX, 8 Seasons, 2001–2010)
You want old-school TV action? Try 24, where every season plays out in real time (each episode covers one hour in a particularly rotten day). Kiefer Sutherland’s Jack Bauer is perpetually sweaty, constantly interrogating people, and mostly right about everything—though his methods are...questionable. It’s high anxiety, heavy with conspiracies, and never lets up. Mary Lynn Rajskub, Carlos Bernard, Dennis Haysbert, Elisha Cuthbert, and James Morrison make up an ensemble cast. Still holds up if you can get past the early-2000s tech. - The Night Agent (Netflix, 3 Seasons, 2023–)
Want a show that eats like potato chips? The Night Agent is built for bingeing. It follows an FBI agent (Gabriel Basso) stuck in a bunker under the White House, mostly answering an emergency phone line that never rings—until he lands smack in the middle of a deadly conspiracy. There are government cover-ups, protection jobs, car chases, and enough plot twists to keep you from looking at your phone. Fola Evans-Akingbola, Luciane Buchanan, Louis Herthum, Albert Jones, and Amanda Warren round things out. Season 4 is coming.
Final Thoughts and A Handy Reminder
