The Stranger Things creators' new movie just landed a release date at Paramount
Paramount has set a release date for the Duffer brothers’ untitled movie, marking their first big-screen project after Stranger Things. The plot’s locked down, but the countdown is on.
If you thought the Duffer Brothers were just going to melt back into the shadows after Stranger Things, think again. Their next big swing—a completely untitled, absolutely mysterious film—now officially has a release date, and yes, the wait is going to be a long one.
Duffer Brothers' Paramount Mystery: Mark Your Calendars for 2028
Paramount's just nailed down 3rd November 2028 for whatever this film turns out to be. No plot details, no cast reveals, not even a working title at this stage. The only guarantees? Matt and Ross Duffer are writing and directing, and the whole thing comes courtesy of their production shingle, Upside Down Pictures.
What you might not know: this isn't just a pet project on the side. This untitled film actually kicks off the brothers' exclusive four-year deal with Paramount, which means we could see them popping up in the studio's output for a while. It’s a bit of a curveball considering they’ve been Netflix regulars up to now, but business is business.
What Have the Duffers Been Up To Since Hawkins?
Finishing up Stranger Things was never going to be their farewell. Straight after, the brothers started piling into new projects—most notably pushing out The Boroughs on Netflix, where they’re executive producers (not showrunners this time around, that credit goes to Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews).
This series has been quietly anointed as Netflix’s sci-fi heir to the Stranger Things throne—and honestly, the streamer seems to think it's a hit. It only landed last month but has already secured renewals through to a third season. Not bad for a debut.
The Boroughs Cast: A Quick Roll Call
- Alfred Molina as Sam
- Geena Davis as Renee
- Alfre Woodard as Judy
- Denis O’Hare as Wally
- Clarke Peters as Art
- Plus: Bill Pullman (Jack), Carlos Miranda (Paz), Jena Malone (Claire), Seth Numrich (Blaine), and Alice Kremelberg (Anneliese)
The Boroughs is off to a flying start on Rotten Tomatoes—97% Tomatometer if you’re a reviewer type, 79% Popcornmeter for actual viewers. Seems fans and critics mostly agree for once.
Stranger Things Spin-Off: Still On the Table, Just Not Any Time Soon
Now, because rumours never die, yes, the Duffers are still toying with the idea of a Stranger Things spin-off. They’re just in no rush to crank out a sequel for the sake of it. They spelt it out on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. Settle in, this is worth reading twice:
'We’re being very careful. We don’t want to rush it. We don’t want it to be anything but excellent. No one wants to make it just to make it. No one wants to just do it to continue Stranger Things. Like, it has to be awesome or forget it. That’s sort of everybody’s mentality about it.'
