The Real Reason Peter Jackson Isn’t Directing The Hunt for Gollum
At Cannes, Peter Jackson explained why he stepped away from directing The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum — and why Andy Serkis is the one he trusts to lead the hunt.
Peter Jackson is stepping aside for the next big Lord of the Rings project, and he wants everyone to know: it was on purpose.
Why Peter Jackson Isn't Directing The Hunt for Gollum
At this year's Cannes Film Festival, the man who basically put hobbits into the pop culture bloodstream explained his decision in plain terms. Long story short, Jackson could have taken the director's chair again for 'The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum,' but he decided Andy Serkis should be the one calling the shots instead.
And before anyone jumps to conclusions—no, Jackson isn't bored with Middle-earth. His main reasoning? This movie is all about one character: Gollum. And Serkis, who tormented himself (and us) as the slimy, split-personality hobbit for years, apparently understands that tortured soul better than anyone else on Earth.
'The most exciting version of this movie is if Andy Serkis makes it, because he's going to put Gollum's psychology on screen like you can't imagine.'
The way Jackson tells it, the project is 'pretty much an internal story' about Gollum's mental tug-of-war and addiction (yes, to the Ring). Basically, he believes Serkis, after years in that digital skin, is the only one who can really do the character justice—especially for a film that sounds like it lives or dies on the inside of Gollum's head.
Jackson's New Role (And How Much He's Interfering)
Peter Jackson fans don't need to panic—he isn't bailing on Tolkien entirely. He is, in fact, still on board as a producer for 'The Hunt for Gollum.' But he wants everyone clear: Serkis has room to take over, not play puppet.
He basically sees his job as more support than showrunner. As of now, Andy Serkis is locked in as both director and star, so we know for sure we're getting the real Gollum sauce for this one.
What We Know So Far
- 'The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum'—next chapter in the franchise
- Directed by Andy Serkis (who's also playing Gollum, obviously)
- Peter Jackson is producing, but not directing
- The story zooms in on Gollum's internal struggles and addiction—so expect the movie to be a lot less about armies and a lot more about creepy dialogue with himself
- Hitting theaters December 17, 2027
In short: Jackson is officially passing the creative torch—but not running away from the shire. He just thinks, for this dark weirdo's story, Andy Serkis is the only one who can crawl into the mud and come back out with something real. Sounds like the right call to me.
