The One Rule Keanu Reeves Never Breaks When Choosing Roles

Keanu Reeves has stuck to one rule for decades when choosing roles—and he just revealed it on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

Keanu Reeves is known for making some very cool, sometimes downright odd choices when it comes to picking his movie roles. Turns out, there’s actually a pretty personal rule behind it—and no, it’s not about following the best script or director.

Keanu's Big (Surprisingly Honest) Rule

During a recent stop on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Keanu was out promoting his next Apple TV project, Outcome, when Colbert decided to take a trip down memory lane. He pulled up an old Kellogg's Corn Flakes commercial from 1987, starring (a much younger) Reeves.

Watching the ad, Colbert joked that Keanu really seemed to enjoy the cereal—kind of selling it a bit harder than your typical actor in a breakfast food spot. Keanu admitted he actually did love those corn flakes. And then he dropped this little gem:

'I would never audition for something I didn’t like. Which is weird.'

Honestly? That’s kind of adorable. Also, a bit strange for Hollywood, where most actors would sell their own grandmother for a role. But Keanu’s always walked his own path, and apparently, it involved only acting in things he genuinely enjoyed—even if that thing was crunchy sugar flakes in a cardboard bowl.

From Corn Flakes to Careers That Stick

For context, that commercial Keanu did was early days—think 1987, just climbing his way out of obscurity. Two years later, he gets his big break as Ted 'Theodore' Logan in Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, and the rest is kind of a wild ride:

  • Point Break – Surfboards, bank robbers, Swayze-ness.
  • Speed – ‘Pop quiz, hot shot!’ and the world’s most explosive bus ride.
  • The Matrix franchise – Leather, slow-mo, and philosophy 101 for everyone.
  • Constantine – Demon-slaying occult weirdness.
  • 47 Ronin – Samurai blockbuster with, let’s say, mixed results.
  • John Wick – Do not mess with this man's dog, ever.
  • Cyberpunk 2077 – Lending his face (and attitude) to 'Johnny Silverhand.'

The man does not mess around with projects he doesn’t want to be in. Clearly.

The Next Reeves Role: Outcome

So what’s next on the Keanu menu? He’s starring as Reef Hawk in Outcome, an Apple TV Original. Listen to this cast list: Jonah Hill (who also directs and co-wrote the script), Martin Scorsese, Cameron Diaz, Matt Bomer, Susan Lucci, David Spade, and Ivy Wolk. That’s a mix of Oscar winners, comedy icons, and soap opera royalty. Hill, by the way, co-wrote the script with Ezra Woods.

The movie spins around Keanu’s character, a Hollywood actor who’s managed to stay sober for five years, but gets hit with a blackmail threat over some mysterious video footage. The whole thing turns into a redemption quest—he has to track down the people he’s hurt before, and dig up his blackmailer.

When and Where

Outcome is dropping on Apple TV on Friday, April 10, 2026. Which, yes, is a very long wait to see if Keanu actually likes this movie as much as he liked those corn flakes.
