Lupita Nyong’o is pulling double duty in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, with the Oscar winner set to play Helen of Troy and a second role in the filmmaker’s sprawling epic.

Christopher Nolan has never been accused of thinking small, but even for him, his next project is massive: he’s tackling The Odyssey, and he’s managed to snag an impressive lineup for this ancient Greek drama. But here’s a fun twist — Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong'o isn’t just playing one iconic role. She’s pulling double duty.

Lupita Nyong'o: Two Roles, One Movie

Yep, you read that right. For some reason, Nolan decided Nyong'o isn’t just Helen of Troy — the famously beautiful wife of Menelaus who launches a thousand ships — she’s also going to play Helen's twin sister Clytemnestra, who is married to Menelaus’s brother Agamemnon (that’s the guy who leads the Greeks against Troy). The news came straight from a TIME profile on Nolan, so this isn’t internet speculation — it's locked in.

Not a bad gig for Nyong'o, who’s coming off voice work in The Wild Robot and a starring role in A Quiet Place: Day One. Apparently, if you want to play complex twins with tragic fates, you need a recent Oscar on your shelf.

Who Else Is On Board?

This cast list reads like someone let a movie nerd loose in a candy store.

  • Matt Damon as Odysseus (finally giving us a different kind of 'bring him home' movie)
  • Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Odysseus's patient wife and Queen of Ithaca
  • Tom Holland as Telemachus, Odysseus’s son (so, Holland gets to sulk and sail now)
  • Robert Pattinson as Antinous, one of Penelope’s especially annoying suitors
  • Charlize Theron as Calypso, the nymph who traps Odysseus (don’t expect the Fast & Furious version though)
  • Jon Bernthal as Menelaus, Nyong'o’s (first) onscreen husband
  • John Leguizamo as Eumaeus, who is Odysseus’s loyal servant
  • Zendaya as the goddess Athena, so, high fashion and divine vengeance incoming
  • Himesh Patel as Eurylochus, one of Odysseus’s crew
  • Mia Goth as Melantho, (let’s just say, not Team Odysseus)
  • Jimmy Gonzales as Cepheus

If all of them actually make it into a single three-hour movie with more than one line, I’ll be shocked.

The 'Epic' Angle (And Nolan’s POV)

Nolan is not shy about the scale here. The entire film is being shot in IMAX and comes with a three-hour runtime. In Nolan’s own words:

"It's an epic film, as the subject matter demands. But it is shorter."

Okay, maybe 'shorter' is just relative when we’re talking about ancient Greek adaptation expectations and Christopher Nolan, but three hours is definitely not short where I come from.

He’s directing from his own script this time. According to Nolan, he sees The Odyssey as something meant for modern audiences — ‘really for people who haven’t read it’ and ‘don’t know anything about it.’ Translation: you won’t need to remember tenth grade English class (or, honestly, bother reading Homer at all).

When Does This All Actually Happen?

The Odyssey is set for a U.S. theatrical release on July 17, 2026. That’s a long sail away, but knowing Nolan, expect more epic casting news (and probably some weird secrecy) as we get closer.

In short: an Oscar winner pulling double duty, a cast full of big names you wouldn’t put together on a group chat, and Christopher Nolan on an ancient Greek war epic — this could get interesting.
