Matthew Fox just settled the biggest Season 1 question in Taylor Sheridan’s hit new Western: the fate of Paul.

So, if you were hoping for Matthew Fox to saddle up again in Taylor Sheridan's latest Western drama, The Madison, I hate to break it to you—that door is 100% closed. Season 2 won't see him riding back into town (or, technically, into any more harrowing posthumous flashbacks).

Matthew Fox Is Out: The How and the Why

Here's the deal: Fox played Paul Clyburn, whose death (along with his brother Preston, played by Kurt Russell) kicked off the whole show—literally, both were gone before the opening credits of the pilot had finished. Even so, the show used flashbacks so well, it gave us some surprisingly moving scenes with Fox and Russell that actually made us care about these two dead characters. Trust me, that's not an easy trick.

After the emotional season finale, where Michelle Pfeiffer's Stacy Clyburn stood over both brothers' graves, Fox gave the official word to The Hollywood Reporter:

'I'm at a point in my life where I'd rather pop in and do something interesting, but I don't want to dedicate six years of my life to something [again].'

Can't blame the guy. He paid his long-haul TV dues on Lost and is clearly happy to take on the occasional high-impact, low-commitment gig these days.

The Sheridan Machine Keeps Rolling

Fox was also quick to heap praise on series mastermind Taylor Sheridan, calling him 'an exceptional writer' and sounding genuinely impressed (maybe a bit baffled) by just how much Sheridan is doing right now. The guy's writing every script himself, overseeing multiple shows at once. If you wonder how that's humanly possible—well, so does Matthew Fox:

'It's mind-boggling. I've worked on other series where there's a creator and a writers room where a lot of people are involved, and he writes everything. It's really kind of astounding.'

Translation: Sheridan's somehow pulling off the work of a small army.

What to Expect From Season 2

Production for Season 2 is already done and dusted, but there isn't even a hint at a premiere date for Paramount+ yet. If you liked the first season's format, good news: Season 2 will also have six episodes, split into two chunks that drop a week apart. (Why this goofy schedule? No idea, but it keeps people talking, I guess.)

Critical Carnage vs. Fan Love

Despite mixed—let's be honest, sometimes downright hostile—critical reviews, The Madison is a massive hit where it counts: actual viewers. The show's sitting pretty on Paramount+'s Top 10, bouncing all the way up to number one globally and in the US after the recent finale. That's alongside Sheridan's other hits like Marshals, Landman, Tulsa King, and the ever-present Yellowstone. So yeah, the Sheridan TV Universe isn't slowing down any time soon.

  • Audience score on Rotten Tomatoes: 76%—fans call it 'incredible,' 'worthwhile,' and 'gut-wrenchingly beautiful.'
  • Critics: Less impressed, with just a 59% approval and complaints that it's 'uneven,' 'slow,' and even Sheridan's 'weakest series to date.'

Who's Still In the Saddle?

Apart from Fox and Russell (whose stories are officially wrapped up), Season 1's cast featured Beau Garrett, Patrick J. Adams, Elle Chapman, Amiah Miller, and Alaina Pollack—most of whom are sticking around. Michelle Pfeiffer continues to anchor the cast as Stacy, holding it together as the central (tragically bereaved) force of the series.

The Madison Season 1 is streaming in full now on Paramount+. As soon as there's a date for the Season 2 premiere—or more news on who'll be joining or leaving the cast—I'll have the details here. Until then, feel free to speculate wildly about what directions Sheridan's emotional rollercoaster of a Western will take next.
