The Boys Finally Reunites Supernatural's Main Trio This Week
Supernatural fans finally get the perfect follow-up as Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles and Misha Collins reunite.
If you spent more time with Sam, Dean, and Castiel over the last two decades than most of your actual friends, here’s some news that should at least temporarily fill the Impala-shaped void in your life: the main Supernatural trio is finally reuniting on screen. Yes, really. Sort of.
The Supernatural Road So Far (and Why This Matters)
Let’s rewind a bit. Supernatural somehow pulled off 15 seasons, building a rabid fan following and making it nearly impossible to find anyone under 40 who doesn’t recognize ‘Carry On Wayward Son’ on contact. The Winchester brothers wrapped their endless monster-fighting marathon in 2020—everyone finally got some rest (or at least, more rest than usual for anyone named Winchester). Since then? Cameos here and there, but nothing that could be called a legit reunion.
Spin-offs? There were attempts. The Winchesters (the show about Sam and Dean’s parents) did sneak out a single 13-episode season, and Jensen Ackles even narrated it, but that ship sank quietly. Frankly, that’s still better than Bloodlines and Wayward Sisters, both of which died before even leaving the dock.
Since then, the main actors have gone their separate, distinctly successful ways—Jared Padalecki took the lead in Walker, Jensen Ackles decided to voice Batman (of all things), and Misha Collins does what Misha Collins does, which is mostly being an internet cryptid. They did cross paths for a jokey appearance, basically playing themselves on The Rookie, but nobody’s going to call that a reunion.
From Hunting Demons to Blowing Up Superheroes
Here’s where things get more interesting—The Boys connection. The Boys is Eric Kripke’s current playground, and he’s the guy who actually created Supernatural before switching from demons to deranged superheroes. He clearly likes to recycle talent, because everyone from Jeffrey Dean Morgan (John Winchester) to Jim Beaver (Bobby Singer) to Rob Benedict (God) has shown up in the Prime Video bloodbath.
Jensen Ackles joined the chaos as Soldier Boy in season 3, and if you haven’t seen it: imagine Captain America, but even more toxic (and, impressively, more traumatized). His big helmet and shield have become sort of iconic and he’s a surprisingly important part of the final season’s story, with his character still causing trouble as of season 5.
But the big, actually exciting bit: episode five is about to drop (April 29), and it’s finally bringing Padalecki and Collins into the mess—on screen, with Ackles, for the first time since Supernatural wrapped up six (!) years ago.
Who’s Playing Whom?
- Jared Padalecki – Playing Mister Marathon, who, in this universe, used to be the token speedster on The Seven (the show’s parody version of the Justice League’s A-list). If you’ve seen The Boys, you know A-Train took that slot later—so now the obvious question is how Mister Marathon fits into the upcoming plot.
- Misha Collins – His character is still under wraps, and honestly, the secrecy is almost impressive at this point. Expect something weird, because it’s The Boys and…well, Misha Collins.
- Jensen Ackles – Still the absolutely unhinged Soldier Boy, part menace, part walking trauma plot.
The show’s been tight-lipped about specifics. But we do know the trio will share screen time—and the trailer backs that up.
Quote Break: Yep, They’ve Still Got It
'They both did great. I was super happy with what their experience was, and what mine was with them on the set. It was a lot of fun... and probably too much fun. They were probably wondering how we got 15 seasons with the three of us just being idiots.'
– Jensen Ackles, on getting the band back together
So, What’s the Catch?
Don’t get your hopes up for a new Supernatural spin-off. If you’re a completionist, keep in mind Padalecki and Collins are almost certainly one-episode wonders—think of it like a victory lap (with a much higher body count and more profanity than The CW ever allowed).
Still, for anyone who misses the world’s most functional codependent demon hunters and their one actual angelic friend? This is the nostalgic crossover you probably never expected to actually happen.
