Season 5 Episode 2 of The Boys ended with a shock, and now showrunner Eric Kripke explains how Soldier Boy survived Butcher’s supe-killing virus — a twist that could blow the season wide open.

If you made it through The Boys Season 5, Episode 2 and were left blinking at your screen thinking, 'Wait, wasn’t that guy supposed to be dead?', you’re definitely not alone. The show’s always been wild, but this particular twist has even longtime fans scratching their heads. Well, showrunner Eric Kripke just cleared the air—and the answer’s got major implications for where this final season is heading.

Soldier Boy: Dead Guy in a Body Bag? Not Exactly.

Let’s rewind. The fifth season of The Boys came out swinging on April 8, 2026, dropping two episodes all at once on Prime Video. Episode two, aptly titled 'Teenage Kix,' ended on a big, weird note: Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles) zipped up in a body bag, then casually sitting upright—alive—after supposedly succumbing to Butcher’s so-called supe-killing virus.

Now, Soldier Boy’s cooped up in that bag because he was exposed to this virus, and two of his former teammates (Rock Hard and Jetstreak, if you’re keeping score) bit the dust in the same room. So why is he the exception?

Eric Kripke Explains (Sort Of)

Kripke laid it out for TV Insider:

'It is true that Soldier Boy is not dead, and the reasons that he's seemingly immune to this virus are what really set up the primary MacGuffin of the season... it really turns everything on its head,' he said. 'If Homelander acquires it, it's game over. If The Boys acquire it, then maybe the people that they love can survive.'

So, What’s the Deal With That Immunity?

Here’s where things get a little nerdy, but actually pretty interesting: The likely culprit is something called V1 (also called V-One to sound cool and dangerous). If you caught Gen V Season 2, you might remember V1 as the first-ever version of Compound V. In the show’s universe, scientist Thomas Godolkin (played by Ethan Slater) injected himself with this stuff back in 1967, claiming V1 didn’t just give you the usual superpowers and beefed-up body—it actually made you functionally immortal.

Soldier Boy goes way back—he was cooked up during World War II, back when Nazi scientist Frederick Vought was running the show. If the early Compound V formula is running through his veins, that could explain why Butcher’s fancy new virus couldn’t put him down, even though it killed Rock Hard and Jetstreak right next to him.

A Quick Recap: Who’s Dead and Who’s Not

  • Soldier Boy: Exposed to Butcher’s anti-supe virus, pronounced dead, then sits up alive post-credits. Apparently built different (literally).
  • Rock Hard & Jetstreak: Also caught in the virus crossfire—but unlike Soldier Boy, they are definitely dead.

This whole twist is now the main engine for Season 5’s plot. Both Homelander and The Boys are scrambling to figure out why Soldier Boy survived and, more importantly, how they can get their hands on whatever made him immune. As Kripke put it: if Homelander figures it out first, everyone else is toast. If The Boys do, it might be the edge they’ve been begging for since season one.

For those keeping up, The Boys is dropping new episodes every Wednesday, with the big finale landing May 20, 2026. And if you thought the show was done surprising you, well, you may want to keep your expectations in check—because clearly, no one’s ever really dead-dead in this universe.
