DC’s Waller series has slammed into a major setback, throwing the 2023-announced project—and Viola Davis’s return as Amanda Waller—into doubt.

So, here’s the latest in the 'What’s Actually Happening With The DCU' department, and let’s just say: if you had hopes for that Amanda Waller spinoff series, maybe find a comfy chair. The show, which became official way back in 2023, is not sprinting toward our screens.

Still Waiting on Waller

Quick refresher: after Viola Davis nailed Amanda Waller in Suicide Squad (2016), The Suicide Squad (2021), Black Adam (2022), and Peacemaker, DC Studios and Warner Bros. TV decided she deserved her own spotlight. Super fans were told that the series would get rolling ahead of James Gunn’s new Superman film (scheduled for 2025). But thanks to a pile-up of real-world production delays—last year’s strikes didn’t help—it’s basically been in neutral ever since.

James Gunn admitted things haven’t exactly been smooth, calling the script process a 'bumpy road.' If that rings some alarm bells, well, you’re not wrong.

What HBO Max Actually Said

This week, Variety grilled HBO Max chief Casey Bloys about whether Waller is anywhere near production. His answer was, frankly, the vaguest of vague:

'Put it this way, I wouldn’t say it’s on the runway. But Lanterns is coming up this summer.'

Translation: they’ll be talking about Green Lantern before they talk about Waller. In Hollywood-speak, that means don’t line up any binge snacks yet.

Who’s Making Waller—Or, You Know, Not Yet

  • Viola Davis would return as Amanda Waller (seriously, perfect casting)
  • The plot is supposed to have her mixing it up with the Peacemaker crew
  • Writers: Christal Henry (she worked on Watchmen) and Jeremy Carver (the guy behind Doom Patrol)
  • No scripts locked, no release date, and, as of now, no forward momentum

When the show was first revealed, Gunn hyped it as a wild, boundary-pushing story and couldn’t wait for people to see Viola Davis in 'Waller pants' again. But, months later, the updates are just... well, less than encouraging. Gunn himself has admitted the process is moving at a crawl, and that, compared to other projects, Waller hasn’t exactly been first out of the gate.

So, if you were counting on Waller showing up on your TV before Superman rebooted (again), you’ll probably be waiting a while. My advice: enjoy Lanterns this summer, keep expectations in check for updates on Waller, and, as always, brace for more delays from the ever-chaotic DC pipeline.
