Teen Titans DCU Movie: James Gunn Delivers Major Update, Debunks Big Rumor
James Gunn just swatted down the latest director rumor for DCU’s live-action Teen Titans, one of the first real updates since its 2024 announcement.
Right, bit of a DC shuffle underway – surprise, surprise – and now there’s movement (well, sort of) on a live-action Teen Titans film. The thing is, this update’s less about actual news and more about squashing the latest round of daft internet speculation. That’s superhero cinema these days, isn’t it? Barely blink and someone’s Twitter handle is suddenly 'an insider'.
Where We Actually Are: The Basics
DC officially announced a live-action Teen Titans film earlier in 2024, because of course we needed one of those. Ana Nogueira is writing the script. If her name’s not ringing a bell, she penned the upcoming Supergirl flick – the one due out 26 June 2026. As of now, that’s the main creative role sorted. Beyond that, radio silence; no cast, and definitely no director announced. At least, not officially.
The Rumour Mill and the ‘Shut Down’
Earlier this week, GeekNation spun up some social media buzz claiming Sam Levinson (yep, Euphoria creator, loves a moody montage) was being talked up as the director for Teen Titans. That rumour grew legs, as this sort of thing always does online.
James Gunn, DC’s co-head honcho (and the DCU’s current myth-buster-in-chief), spotted it and decided he’d had enough. He hopped on Threads and posted:
'No it’s not true. Not talking to any directors quite yet. This “insider” isn’t inside much.'
Clear as you like. Someone even pressed Gunn for clarification, asking whether that 'not talking to any directors yet' line applied to Teen Titans specifically, or all the upcoming DC movies. Gunn was straightforward: 'Not talking to any directors about Titans.' End of matter, apparently.
So, What’s Actually Locked In?
- Film: Live-action Teen Titans, part of the wider DC Universe refresh
- Screenwriter: Ana Nogueira (of Supergirl 2026 fame)
- Director: No one lined up yet – ignore the gossip
- Cast: Also no names attached
Who are the Teen Titans Anyway?
The Teen Titans aren’t exactly fringe characters, but the lineup fluctuates wildly. Launched in the 1960s DC comics, the originals included Robin, Kid Flash, Aqualad, and Wonder Girl. Later, they roped in Beast Boy, Raven, Starfire, and Cyborg, among others. It’s a bit of a revolving door, so no clue yet who’ll make it into the film. Gunn hasn’t dropped any hints on which characters are getting the live-action treatment.
Previous Adaptations: A Quick Refresher
The best-known take (and probably the fan favourite) is the 2003-2006 animated series on Cartoon Network – five seasons and even a TV movie in the mix. There was also a live-action show called Titans: ran two seasons on DC Universe (2018-2019), then hopped to HBO Max for another two (2021-2023). Neither lasted forever, but that’s superhero telly for you.
The Hard Part, According to Gunn
Here’s an interesting aside from Gunn himself, very much a peek behind the curtain: when someone asked what’s the trickiest bit to figure out – cast, writer or director – Gunn’s verdict was unequivocal.
'Writers and directors are much harder than actors. Such a smaller pool to choose from.'
So, if you’re trying to guess why the directing gig hasn’t been filled, it’s not for lack of actors hoping to wear a mask.
