Lock the doors: Lionsgate has locked a date for The Housemaid’s Secret, sequel to Paul Feig’s December psychological thriller The Housemaid, based on Freida McFadden’s 2022 novel, which starred Sydney Sweeney as Millie Calloway alongside Amanda Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar.

Well, that didn’t take long. Hot on the heels of last winter’s psychological thriller The Housemaid, Lionsgate is already moving ahead with a sequel—because in movieland, nothing says “hit” like greenlighting part two before the first one’s credits finish rolling.

The Housemaid’s Secret: Here Comes Chapter Two

Here are the basics: The Housemaid dropped in U.S. theaters last December. It’s based on Freida McFadden’s 2022 “unputdownable” novel and brought in some serious star power: Sydney Sweeney leading as Millie Calloway, Amanda Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar as the creepy Winchester couple, plus Michele Morrone as Enzo Accardi. Paul Feig directed, which still surprises some people who know him as the guy behind comedies like Bridesmaids.

The sequel, The Housemaid’s Secret (sometimes just called The Housemaid 2 if you’re keeping track), will adapt book number two in McFadden’s series. And yes, the release date is already penciled in: December 17, 2027. You might want to set a reminder, because the rest of Hollywood is planning to blow up that day, too.

Circle Your Calendar—Or Don’t, Yet

If you’re a fan of blockbusters stacking up like planes on a runway, December 17, 2027 is about to get crowded. Alongside The Housemaid’s Secret, there’s Avengers: Secret Wars and The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum all aiming for the same big holiday slot. And just to complicate the schedule, Frozen 3 lands a few weeks earlier, with Buds and a new Murder, She Wrote movie coming out later that same week.

Who’s Coming Back? Who’s Jumping Ship?

  • Sydney Sweeney returns as Millie, still cleaning up other people’s messes but with more secrets and trauma, if the book is any indication.
  • Michele Morrone is back as Enzo. (If you were hoping for more moody Italian co-stars, you’re in luck.)
  • Amanda Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar (Nina and Andrew Winchester) aren’t currently attached. Here’s why: their characters aren’t even in the second novel. Never say never, but don’t hold your breath for a surprise cameo.
  • Kirsten Dunst joins the cast. Details on her character are under wraps (for now), but that’s a notable addition.
  • Paul Feig is also returning to direct, marking another twist in his still-evolving post-comedy directing streak.

What’s This One About?

The official description for The Housemaid’s Secret reads like another page-turner—troubled protagonist, mysterious employer, secrets behind closed doors. This time, Millie Calloway lands a job cleaning a posh penthouse for the Garrick family. Everything seems appropriately glossy and perfect… except she’s never seen Mrs. Garrick, only heard her (possibly crying) from behind a locked door. Laundry day gets weirder when Millie spots bloodstains on Mrs. Garrick’s white nightgowns. Eventually, curiosity wins and Millie knocks. The door opens, and—no spoilers, but let’s just say what’s inside doesn’t look anything like a happy marriage.

'It’s hard to find an employer who doesn’t ask too many questions about my past. So I thank my lucky stars that the Garricks miraculously give me a job, cleaning their stunning penthouse… It’s almost perfect. But I still haven’t met Mrs. Garrick… And one day I can’t help but knock on the door. When it gently swings open, what I see inside changes everything…'

Where to Watch the First One

If you missed it in theaters, The Housemaid is already rentable or buyable on Prime Video, Apple TV, and all the usual streaming haunts.

Final Thought

If you’re still keeping score, The Housemaid’s Secret will need to fight for your attention against some of the biggest franchises in existence. But hey, nothing like a little murder and suspense to distract you from capes and elves.
